MIKE SPENCER REBOUNDS TO WIN THE “HALL OF FAME CLASSIC” AT CANYON

After six official lead changes and flipping the previous night, Mike Spencer of Temecula, California’s won the “Hall of Fame Classic” at Canyon Speedway Park. The five-time Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion took the lead from R.J. Johnson on lap twenty-six and sailed to the $3,000 triumph. Fast qualifier Johnson, Brody Roa, Josh Hodges, and “The Magic Man” Mike Martin rounded out the top-five drivers.

Starting on the outside of the front row, former ASCA Champion Josh Pelkey led the first seven laps. Looking for his third straight victory, “The Demon” Damion Gardner powered by Pelkey and controlled the feature until the twentieth circuit. USAC SouthWest Champion R.J. Johnson and Gardner traded the top spot, but Johnson got the upper hand. Starting seventh, Spencer made his presence felt by passing Johnson on lap twenty-six and sprinted to the “Hall of Fame Classic” victory.

Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Mike Spencer earned the thirty-seventh USAC/CRA win of his career. The second generation driver started his night by qualifying fourth out of twenty-one racers and placed sixth in his heat race. Heading to the Perris Oval Nationals, Spencer reclaimed the points lead with two feature wins, six Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, eight heat race victories, two Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi Main Wins, two DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Awards, eighteen top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led to his credit.

Laveen, Arizona’s R.J. Johnson ran a strong race but had to settle for second at the “Hall of Fame Classic.” Piloting Bobby Martin’s #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Sherman, Johnson claimed his first Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award of 2015 and earned an additional $150 from Beaver Stripes. Finishing fourth in his heat race, the USAC SouthWest point leader is seventeenth in USAC/CRA standings with three heat race victories, three top-10 finishes, and 8 feature laps led.

After running second the previous night, Garden Grove, California’s Brody Roa claimed third at Canyon Speedway Park. Racing Lee & Norma Leonard’s #48 HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa was second quick in time trials and scored third in his heat race. The former Wagsdash Champion left Arizona ranked sixth in the point chase with three heat race victories, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 19 feature laps led on the season.

Young Josh Hodges of Tijeras, New Mexico ran fourth in the 30-lap main event. Driving the family owned #74X Parts Plus / Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, Hodges qualified seventh overall and ran second to Charles Davis Jr. in his heat race. In limited starts, the former ASCS SouthWest Rookie of the Year is twenty-second in points with three top-10 finishes, and 2 feature laps led.

After setting fast time on Friday, Yuma, Arizona’s “The Magic Man” Mike Martin took fifth at the checkered flags. Piloting his #16 Sherwin-Williams / Ultimate Offroad Maxim, Martin was third fast in time trials and placed third in his heat race. To date, the former “Hall of Fame Classic” winner sits twenty-first in USAC/CRA points with one DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Award and three top-10 finishes.

Logan Williams of Yorba Linda, California earned his second DMI / Keizer Wheels “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a ninth place run from seventeenth. Racing Jack Jory’s #5 John Jory Corporation / Hollingsworth Sandwich Shop Spike, Williams qualified seventeenth overall and ran seventh in his heat race. Currently, the 2014 Rookie of the Year is ninth in the point chase with one heat race victory, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi Main Win, and six top-10 finishes.

For the second night in a row, Buckeye, Arizona’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. raced to victory in the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis was thirteenth quick in time trials and raced from thirteenth to eighth in the main event. In limited starts, the five-time Arizona Sprint Car Champion is twenty-fifth in points with two heat race victories, one DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Award, and two top-10 finishes on the year.

“The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord, California won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Piloting Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner qualified fifth overall and scored eleventh in the feature after replacing a flat tire. Heading to the Oval Nationals, the 3-time champion is second in points with eight feature wins, two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, nine heat race victories, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 179 feature laps led to his credit.

Yorba Linda, California’s Austin Williams won the night’s 10-lap Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #3. Racing Jack Jory’s #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams was fifteenth fast in time trials and ran sixteenth in the feature after a flip. The former Rookie of the Year left Canyon ranked fifth in points with three heat race victories, one DMI / Keizer Wheels Hard Charger Award, and fifteenth top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led.

Starting Thursday, November 12th, the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will return to Perris Auto Speedway for three nights of action at the 20th Annual Oval Nationals Presented by All Coast Construction. Co-sanctioned with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Cars, the Saturday night finale will pay $25,000-to-win.
