CUMMINS FAST IN WINNING THE LABOR DAY CHALLENGE
Haubstadt, IN - September 6, 2015 - Kyle Cummins raced to victory in an exciting Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car feature at the Tri-State Speedway Sunday night. Cummins, who is from Princeton, IN, assumed the role of the challenger early in the event before taking the lead after a restart on lap 18. He led the remaining 12 laps The victory was a $3,000 payday for the Rock Steady Race Team. The car is owned by Hank Byram. The victory was the first this year in MSCS for the four time series champion.
The feature began with Carson Short jumping out to an early lead. Three laps later Brady Short raced past Carson coming off of turn four and the race had a new leader. Kyle Cummins moved into second spot as Carson Short dropped back to third. With the event half over Jared Fox spun to a stop and the caution came out. The restart was an opportunity for Kyle Cummins. He dove underneath Brady Short in turn three and took the lead. Short charged down the front stretch looking for a chance to counter the pass. Then it happened. His sprint car biked and began flipping. Fans watched in disbelief as his car sailed over the retaining wall gaining altitude and clipped the top of the billboards before landing outside the catch fence on the service road to the pit area. The Kemper Technology Consulting billboard took the hit.
Brady Short was checked out by EMTs and returned to the track on the back of a four wheeler to reassure fans that he was OK. That brought about a standing ovation. The unfortunate incident ended his MSCS five-in-a-row winning streak. It also ended a first place challenge that had become an absolute dual with the promise of more to come.
Brandon Mattox passed Carson Short on lap 22 and sped on to a runner-up finish. Kent Schmidt was also on the move and got by Carson Short with just three laps to go. Mattox and Schmidt both earned their best finishes of this season. Carson Short finished fourth and Chad Boespflug was fifth. Dakota Jackson had started on the pole and would finish sixth. Jordan Kinser , Brian Karraker, Chet Williams, and Hunter O’Neal rounded out the top ten.
Chris Babcock received the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award in finishing eleventh. Patrick Budde was the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger of the Race. He started 20th and finished 12th. Even though the frontrunners were setting a blistering pace drivers on back through the pack were racing forward. Eight different drivers gained five or more spots during the running of the feature.
Three preliminary heat races were held. Those were won by Kyle Cummins, Dakota Jackson, and Jeff Bland Jr. With all 23 drivers involved set to transfer directly to the feature, they were competing to earn higher starting spots. A B-Main was not held.
The next event involving the MSCS Sprint Cars will be the Haubstadt Hustler on Saturday night September 19th. The show will be a co-sanctioned event which includes the USAC Sprint Cars. The combined field of cars & drivers will be racing for $10,000 to win at the Class Track - Tri-State Speedway.
