Shane Stewart Tops RacingJunk.com Qualifying Night at the FVP Knoxville Nationals!
by Bryan Hulbert and Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, August 12, 2015 –
When Shane Stewart rolled into Knoxville on Sunday for the Capitani Classic, he walked away with a $5,000 payday and the goal of beating Donny Schatz. Fast Forward to Wednesday’s RacingJunk.com Qualifying Night, and the Bixby, Okla. shoe put his Jeff Gordon throwback / Kick-It No. 16 in Victory Lane just ahead of Donny; collecting a cool $12,000 payday in his 14th career Knoxville Raceway victory.

“You don’t every let your guard down with him [Schatz]. I’ve been beat a lot this year by him and we’re going to have to be a little better to beat him on Saturday,” said Shane in Victory Lane. “Honestly, I told the guys when we drew No. 71 to just relax, it didn’t make a huge effect on Sunday with twice as many racecars, and I was actually shocked the track slowed down as much as it did but it is what it is. It put us on the front row and we were able to take advantage of it.”

Earning the pole for the evening’s 25 lap feature event, Shane was quick to hit the cushion through the first two turns to hold the lead.

Keeping ahead of Daryn Pittman as traffic came into play on Lap 8 by 1.908 seconds, Stewart nearly tagged the wall through the third and fourth turns trying to clear a group of slower cars.

Losing very little speed, Shane put four slower cars between himself and the race for second involving Daryn Pittman, Wayne Johnson, and Donny Schatz with the trio going three deep on Lap 11 with Johnson taking the runner-up spot.

The first caution of the night on Lap 15 for Ian Madsen, who retired to the Pits with damage to the rear suspension, Stewart lined up with Johnson, Schatz, Pittman, and Gravel in tow. Staying high on the restart, Wayne Johnson dove low, but would not have enough steam to complete the pass, allowing Donny Schatz the opportunity to take over second.

Giving chase into traffic in the closing laps, Shane banked off the cushion in turn one on the final circuit, but would not be denied, crossing the checkered flag 0.614 seconds ahead of the Bad Boy Buggies No. 15.

“This whole team’s phenomenal. Bad Boy Buggies and Chevrolet Performance, without those guys, we wouldn’t be doing this and Tony Stewart himself being here this year, we’re glad to have him here with us. We wanted to get him a win tonight, but we’ll try our damndest on Saturday night,” commented Schatz.

Taking advantage of the mid-race restart, David Gravel was able to shoot to the final podium step with a big run down the back straightaway on Lap 16, “It’s been a crazy year testing how much I love this sport and I love it a lot. We’ve been working really hard, just struggling on the balance of the racecar and two days ago, we got a good balance, got a good Al Parker engine now, and were able to qualify well. I’m looking forward to the feature. If we keeping doing this, we’ll be up here more often.”

Paul McMahan moved up one spot to finish fourth with Justin Henderson from tenth completing the top-five.

Wayne Johnson slipped back to sixth with Daryn Pittman also slipping from second to finish seventh. Advancing from the B-Feature, California’s Rico Abreu charged from 23rd to eighth with Greg Hodnett and Sheldon Haudenschild completing the top-ten.

With 55 drivers timing in, drivers were divided into five Heat Races with Jamie Veal, Willie Croft, Tyler Courtney, Tony Shilling, and Dakota Hendrickson earning wins.

C-Feature action went to Jac Haudenschild with Tasker Phillips topping the B-Feature.

A look at points after the first night of action, and Donny Schatz with quick time, third in his Heat, and runner-up in the feature leads the charge with 492 points. David Gravel is second with 485, followed by Paul McMahan (471), Sheldon Haudenschild (465), and Shane Stewart (460).

Join us tomorrow night, Thursday, August 13 for night #2 of the 55th FVP Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores!  For more information on Knoxville Raceway, visit www.KnoxvilleRaceway.com!

Good info

I noticed guys with wingless background did some hard charging: Rico from 23rd to 8th & Clauson 24th to 11th

No point to make, just interesting...

Can't remember the front row transferring to the A-Main in 4 of the 5 heats, wonder how many times this has happened in the past?  All 8 races last night won from the front row, wonder again when the last time that happened during the Nationals.  Not complaining here, watched the show on Cushion and thought it was okay, luckily they followed the racing action and left the leader who was often GONE out of the equation.....

The point totals after Donny seem really low. There should be several Thurs. qualifiers who jump up in the lineup.

I watch Schatz time in and it seemed like his car stayed straighter than the car in the corners.

Ahh, still feeling bad for being made look stupid on most of your posts, here goes another.

Tell me something I don't know, the obvious is the low hanging fruit but that's maybe all you can do.  I and anyone watching the race on The Cushion knew everything you said and then some and Wayne had a motor going South, he hasn't forget how to drive.  It was interesting that the first 3 starters in the A are all from Oklahoma, pretty neat I think.

How about you do something worthwhile for a change and look up how often the front row makes the A or how many times a night had 8 winners from the front row, contribute something, just once big fella, can you handle it?   Before you whine for the 20th time I am talking to you Ford97 aka The Dummy and I refuse to make you happy by replying to you, it's more fun to see you suffer the usual mental breakdown.....

PS  One car that didn't start in the A-Main top 10 got there, great job Rico....passing at the back of the pack never has done much for me, watching a couple hard chargers like Rico and Clauson would have been nice to see but of course Dummy posts about all the passing in the A because he's basically either blind or doesn't get it, likely both....

There really is only one main story to come out of last nights racing - barring any mechanical issue on Saturday night, Donny Schatz is going to win the Knoxville Nationals.  I know that's not earth shattering.  Everyone on here can debate all the want about who can challenge him (Brown, Lasoski, Stewart, etc.) but if Schatz is starting in the first two rows this race is over before it starts.

-2014's first night had seven races with front row winners. (All five Heats, C Main, and B Main).  I mean, its not eight, but higher than what I thought it would be.

-2014's second "night" had six races with front row winners (Four of the five heats, C Main, and B Main).

-2013's first night had three races with front row winners (Two of the five heats and the C Main).

-2013's second night had five races with front row winners (Three of the five heats, C Main, and the B Main).

-2012's first night night had five races with front row winners (Four of the five heats and the B Main).

-2012's second night had six races with front row winners (Four of the five heats, C Main, and the B Main).

-2011's first night had three races with front row winners (Three of the five heats).

-2011's second night had five races with front row winners (Four of the five heats and the C Main).

-2010's first night had five races with front row winners (Three of the five heats, C Main, and the B Main).

-2010's second night had three races with front row winners (One of the heats, C Main, and the B Main).

-2009's first night had six races with front row winners (All five heats and the B Main).

-2009's second night had five races with front row winners (Three of the five heats, C Main, and B Main).

I was bored, had time, and have a pretty large amount of self-loathing, so why the hell not?

What does all of this mean?  I dont know.  Notice, no A-Main winners came from the front row in the years I checked.  I think three guys came from 3rd (If I remember).  Final talley..... in the years I checked, an average of 4.91 races out of 8  were won from the front row (I only used the heats and mains, no non-qualifiers).  Is that more, less or about what you expected?

Nice work dude, interesting to see what has happened.  I was a regular at the Nationals from around '92 to '07 and don't remember it happening that much but heck I don't remember much from those years period, lol....

Average starting position of the winner 4.33.

Interesting note: 2013 Night 1 B Main cars were Sides, Jeffrey, Schatz, and Pittman.  Sides went from 21st to 9th, Jeffrey from 22nd to 14th, Schatz from 23rd to 10th and Pittman from 24th to 5th.  A lot of passing in that one.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?
