Angell Park Speedway

Sun Prairie, WI

IRA

33 cars

Scott Biertzer (20th car out to time) set quick time at 12.176 seconds on the 1/3-mile oval, just five-thousandths of a second off Ian Madsen’s track record set earlier this year.  Bill Rose (16th car out) was second quick, followed by Scott Neitzel (32nd), Parker Price-Miller (4th), Steve Meyer (18th), Jim Moughan Jr. (29th), Jeremy Schultz (12th), Bill Balog (26th), Scotty Thiel (19th) and Phillip Mock (8th).  Meyer’s motor shut down on his second lap and he scratched for the night.

Heat one (started): 1. Russell Borland 23 (1) 2. Biertzer 4B (6) 3. Moughan 99m (5) 4. Bill Wirth 53w (7) 5. Donovan Peterson 19 (3) / 6. Mock 1m (4) 7. Rick Kelsey 11K (2) DNS – Mike Decker 12

Mock spun before a lap could be completed.  Borland led the 10-lapper early over Kelsey, Biertzer and Moughan.  Kelsey would pull to the infield on lap six while running second.  Borland won by a straightaway.

Heat two (started): 1. Mike Reinke 02 (3) 2. Blake Nimee 79 (2) 3. Ben Schmidt 35 (4) 4. Wayne Modjeski 14AJ (1) 5. Schultz 5J (6) / 6. Rose 6 (6) 7. Josh Walter 12w (7) DNS – Doc Probst 1

Reinke shot under the front row to take the early lead and was out front the rest of the way.  Rose snagged the fifth and final transfer briefly on the first lap, but Schultz was able to drive back by and hold it the rest of the way.

Heat three (started): 1. Kris Spitz 4K (2) 2. Scott Uttech 7 (4) 3. Balog 2 (5) 4. Bryon Walters 5 (1) 5. Jason Johnson 44 (3) / 6. Matt Vandervere 10V (7) 7. Neitzel 2w (6) 8. Allen Hafford 38 (8)

Spitz led S. Uttech and Walters early.  Balog passed Neitzel, Johnson and Vandervere in one cushion move in turn four to go from sixth to third.  He would move by Walters on lap three for third.  Vandervere challenged for the fifth and final transfer, but came up tenths of a second short.

Heat four (started): 1. Jordan Goldesberry 65 (4) 2. Price-Miller 9P (6) 3. Dave Uttech 68 (1) 4. Kyle Marten 99 (3) 5. Thiel 64 (5) / 6. Jereme Schroeder 43 (2) 7. Dennis Spitz 41 (7) 8. John Fahl 0 (8)

Schroeder led early ahead of Goldesberry and D. Uttech.  At the halfway point, Price-Miller grabbed third from D. Uttech.  On lap six, Goldesberry slid in front of Schroeder for the lead.  Price-Miller followed a lap later.  By lap nine, D. Uttech, Martin and Thiel all found their way by Schroeder for the transfers.  The heats yielded little to hold onto on the bottom of the track.

B main (started): 1. Rose (1) 2. Neitzel (2) 3. Mock (3) 4. Vandervere (6) / 5. Walter (5) 6. Schroeder (4) 7. Hafford (9) 8. Fahl (10) 9. Probst (8) 10. D. Spitz (7) DNS – Kelsey, Decker

Rose led Neitzel and Mock the entire 12-lap distance.  Schroeder rode in fourth, until Vandervere found his way by for the final transfer on lap five.  One caution came out for D. Spitz, who came to a stop on lap ten.  Rose and Neitzel got their time spots back for finishing one-two.

A main (started): 1. Price-Miller (7) 2. Reinke (1) 3. Thiel (3) 4. Neitzel (12) 5. Biertzer (8) 6. Rose (11) 7. Mock (23) 8. Borland (9) 9. Marten (17) 10. S. Uttech (14) 11. Schmidt (13) 12. Schultz (5) 13. Johnson (16) 14. Peterson (15) 15. Wirth (22) 16. Vandervere (24) 17. D. Uttech (21) 18. Modjeski (19) 19. K. Spitz (10) 20. Goldesberry (2) 21. Nimee (18) 22. Moughan (6) 23. Walters (20) 24. Balog (4)

A quick reworking of the track made for great two groove racing in the feature.  Heat winners and the six quickest qualifiers making it through their heats made the first five rows.  Biertzer drew an eight for the inversion.  That gave the pole to Reinke, who took the early lead in the 30-lapper over Goldesberry, Thiel and Balog.  On lap two, Balog snatched third from Thiel, while Price-Miller moved into the top five.  With three laps in the books, Balog pulled off with a broken rocker arm.  Reinke led Goldesberry, Thiel, Price-Miller and Schultz back to green.  Price-Miller was working well on the low side of one and two and shot by Thiel for third on the restart.  He would take second from Goldesberry on lap seven.  Reinke maneuvered well through traffic.  Schultz and Moughan were running fifth and sixth when they came together and spun with 17 laps in the books.  Reinke led Price-Miller, Goldesberry, Thiel and a surging Neitzel back to green.  The leaders were back in lapped traffic quickly.  Price-Miller had one shot at the leader and took advantage on lap 25.  Three laps later, the lapped car of Nimee got over the cushion when he was pressured by the leader and hit the wall.  Goldesberry lost oil pressure and pulled off while running fourth.  Price-Miller pulled away for his first IRA win on the green, white, checker finish.  He and the crew had about an hour of sleep after running the King’s Royal in Ohio Sunday morning.  It was Reinke’s second runner-up finish in a row having gone from 20th to second the previous weekend at the Dodge County Fairgrounds.  Mock was the hard-charger, advancing sixteen spots.

It was a tough night for Balog as he also took the lead on lap nine in the midget feature and looked to be headed to victory before mechanical problems surfaced.  Brandon Waelti won that feature for the first time in four years after a brief retirement.

For what it's worth, Nimee had a right rear going down for a number of laps, it finally let go which put him in to the wall. To his credit, PPM apologized in victory Lane. I was in turn 4 so I didn't actually see what happened.

Anyway I had a great time, hung out and watched from the infield with some fun people including Tom Bigelow. Glad the IRA came back to APS, and I really look forward to the 2 more nights there this year, especially the NSL/IRA show.

I did not see it, so this is only what I heard (Don't take it as fact until someone can confirm). But I was told that the 5j came in and drove over the left front of the 99car in the work area after they got into each other in turns 3 and 4. Which also knocked an IRA official to the ground. I heard that a review was taking place of the incident

Yeah, it would make sense. That Schultz is a hot headed wind bag. He needs someone to knock him on his a$$. I had heard he took a swing at Schmidt a few years back at Plymouth too. If this story is true, he better be done for the year, especially if an official was knocked over as well. Angell Park is congested in the work area, and theres NO place for that kind of BS, thats how people get hurt or killed. The IRA would be better off without that hothead out there. Moughan is a pretty nice guy, and not the type to wreck someone on purpose, as most people know in a sprint car, you run just as much a chance of wrecking yourself, so very rarely do you see anyone try to wreck another car.

The IRA official was not hit. He lost his footing and fell in the mud AFTER Schultz tried to take the left from off of the 99 car. Kevin fell after both cars were at a stop. I had a great view of this from down by turn 1.

When a track is single groove drivers get desperate to pass and take risky sliders until they get in traffic and are forced to change their line. The only passing was once lappers were in the mix. Heats were single file from lap 2 on. AP needs to get assistance in track prep for the big 410's. Remember they have not had the IRA there for a long time. They should get track people from Beaver Dam or Wilmot to assist them and get it rite for the last 2 races.

I disagree, they worked the track before the A and I thought it turned out pretty good. You are right about the heats though. The B was also a parade.

Agreed. Everytime they worked the very bottom and very top prior to the A main, its been pretty good racing. The heats however.... Other than that, Mock moved up 17, Marten 9, PPM came from I believe 8th... was some pretty good racing imo

APS needs to get track prep? Are you freakin' kidding me? That has been the most consistant and raciest track IRA has been at all year long, and in my honest opinion it isnt even close. Its also the only one who's pre-feature track prep has actually made a difference in the racing. So there are three shows there. Two of the shows have multiple grooves and spectacular racing. One off night and the hammer drops? Really? There is a reason this is quickly becoming LOTS of the IRA guys favorite tracks to run. Every track has an off night on how racey it is. Even Chili Bowl, where the same guys have been preparring the track for YEARS miss it every once in a while (a few years ago the Championship A main was right around the bottom for everyone). Also, for the record there were MULTIPLE guys going forward by utilizing the bottom on Sunday night. Including Neitzel (12th to 4th). Just because the leaders had a hard time running the bottom doesn't mean there was nothing down there....

Who else noticed the water truck just barely squeeze between the turn 4 wall and the big tractor at a high rate of speed?! Was one of the better moves I saw all night! We were watching him, wondering, 'is he really going to try and fit that there?!' somebody get him a ride! Hilarious

It was his only choice. We found out earlier in the evening that the water truck had no brakes LOL. They were telling people standing by turn 4 to stay away from the track because of it.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that saw that! I had no idea about the brakes, makes perfect sense.

The work area was a problem for the IRA the last time at AP as well.  One guy gets to go and one guy doesnt.  The penalty here will be inconsistant compaired to other penaltys as well.  A little heated smack talk between drivers is comical.  But running into another car in the work area should not be tolerated.  All you will be doing is sending the message its ok until someone gets hurt.  Its simple take points and money for the event one without the other does no good, taking some cash has no long term affect and sends no message.  A series needs to be about the big picture.

Results of penalties should show on points tonight. We also had the Mock deal last week, what were those results?

In this day and age of technology advances, one thing has remained a constant:  the track prep equipment.  Water trucks everywhere are the dumpiest, rustiest, half broke down vehicles anywhere  lol.  Here is an idea for track photographers......Get some pictures of these antiquated looking vehicles, tractors pulling sheepsfoot, water trucks, old graders, etc....  That would make for a very interesting pictorial. Just a thought....

and from what it appears, no penalty for the #5j according to updated points. With that precedent being set, beat away on each other fellas!! bystanders... look out.
