EVANS TAKES NMRA-TQ MIDGET BAKERSFIELD VICTORY – By Tim Kennedy
Bakersfield, CA., Jun. 20 – West Evans repeated his April 18 NMRA-TQ Midget Series 20-lap victory at the third-mile clay Bakersfield Speedway as part of a multi-division program. He drove his own No. 36 Spike/ Bob Wirth-built 750cc Suzuki. His second triumph of the season moved the Moorpark resident back into the series point lead with 486 points. His advantage is eight points after eight of 15 scheduled races.
With seven TQ midgets present, NMRA ran only one eight-lap heat race. Evans also won that after starting sixth. In the 20-lap feature Evans started third. He defeated pole starter / runner-up Scott Dobson (No. 18 Stewart/Honda). Chuck West started second in the second Evans Motor-sports car and finished third.
Dave Lambert started and finished fourth. Three TQ rookies comprised the back half of the field. Kevin Kale and Ted Dann finished fifth and sixth respectively. Owner/driver Ace Kale was unable to start from fifth grid position.
Bruce Hiroshima, a two-time 2015 feature winner, was not present. He was the point leader by eight points prior to the event. His absence dropped him to fourth in current driver points at 428, 58 digits in back of Evans. Hiroshima's No. 5 TQ dropped from first place in owner points to third with 449 points. It now trails Evans' No. 36 (510 points) by 61 points.
The next NMRA race will be a return visit to Jim Naylor's fifth-mile, clay Ventura Raceway on Saturday, July 11 with a return to Bakersfield Speedway booked for July 25.
