I think it would be interesting to see all the nonwinged drivers strap on a wing and run some Woo races. Yeah there are a couple now that do it but very few. Lets see it go both ways.

Gimme a break. A whlie back John Haenei of the winged IRA too his wing off and finished 6th in a USAC sprint race. So you think winged guys are not capable of going much slower? Let's see the USAC guys come to a WoO show.

Non wing fans just don't pay attention! There have been numerous times over the years that Outlaw drivers have removed the wings and dusted off the very best of the non wing drivers. Not only did Haudenschild win the Mopar Million (and other non wing USAC races), Stevie Smith,Jr finished second at the Million, the VERY FIRST TIME HE EVER RACED WITHOUT A WING! Just because they have a wing over the top of them doesn't diminish the fact that they run in all conditions, on all sizes of tracks, and nearly 100 times a year. Do it both ways and in the end the WoO drivers and other winged drivers would have the average highest finishes in both cases. No question about it!

This is good. From somebody that loves all kinds of sprint racing. You can either hold a car down with air and when it comes time to turn left you turn left. (Wing car) or you can back a car in as hard as you dare and stand on it while turning right. (Non wing car). Also everybody bring safety glasses and quit bitching about the dust let's see some real racing. Gotta love them both. They get me excited.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Do you have any examples that aren't from over 10 years ago?
Very few wing guys even try to take the crutch off anymore, yet non wing guys do so and run very well. (at least 3 WoO wins this year alone)
Can you explain why USAC is the preferred training ground for drivers wanting to move into the highest paying form of motorports (at least 20 so far and two more in the pipeline) and the WoO has only put two drivers there?

Is Rico or Bell considered USAC? They both have WoO wins this year. How many WoO, All Starts, IRA or ASCS drivers have USAC wins?

The last one I know of is Bill Rose but I don't know if I would call him a outlaw. I think the words for him is he's a sprint car racer.

I ment the WRG wouldn't want to do that.

Not too many of those kinda racers around any more. I think we need more of them. Racers drive anything, anywhere (even taxi cabs and sporty cars)

I've wanted the All Stars to take the wings off and do about 10 non wing shows in Indiana each year. It would give them a way to expand into some new territory so to speak while still maintaining reasonable travel since most teams are Ohio based. Great way to keep at about 50 shows with reasonable travel.

I really think more USAC guys go because they want out. They don't race very often and for little money compared to winged cars. I generally think most winged racers are pretty happy doing what they are doing.

Ted Johnson banned non-wing races after several deaths in non-wing cars in the early '80's. I believe when Roger Larson and Darrell Dockery(SPELLING?) were killed in the same crash at Knoxville that Ted said "no more non-wing races for the Outlaws." Outlaws ran both wing and non-wing races in the early days and one weekend in Terre Haute was non-wing Sat. with Sunday a winged show. Less car damage and less violent flips were advantages of having the wing on and Ted didn't need to have his guys touring the country tearing up equipment or getting injured/killed on a regular basis so he deemed the wings to be the best and only way to go. Outlaws ran several pavement shows as well back in the day. I was there before and at the beginning of the Outlaws and, boy, was it ever fun to follow the series and watch it grow! They used to run Haubstadt, Bloomington, Paragon, Tri-City Speedway, Terre Haute and other tracks within decent driving distance from my house all the time several times a year so I got to see them a lot. Ted simply had to keep enough cars on the tour to make it viable.

It was Bob Trostle who loaded up at Knoxville after Gary Scott was killed at the start of a Feature race in 1982 and stated he would not be back until Knoxville made wings mandatory. His reasoning was that from 1979 (Dawley/Larsen) and that race in 1982, 4 drivers had been killed at Knoxville. Ted Johnson followed suit and also made wings mandatory.
