MUFFLER INSERTS ARE NOT LEGAL FOR USAC WESTERN COMPETITION
By Lance Jennings

JUNE 23, 2015... Western officials with the United States Auto Club would like to reiterate that muffler “inserts” are NOT legal for competition with the USAC/CRA Sprint, West Coast Sprint, and Western Midget Series. Items such as the Schoenfeld #42530, 43035, and 43540 do not meet the sound level standards set by the majority of tracks where the divisions compete. French Market Coffee cans are also not legal as a muffler.

Most of the race tracks in California are located on state fairgrounds and they have a mandatory 95db at 100 feet sound rule. Fairground tracks such as Ventura, Petaluma and Chico have an even tougher rule and specify their track legal mufflers. Private tracks such as Bakersfield and Santa Maria have adopted the 95db rule as a good neighbor policy. The muffler “inserts” will not meet any of the race track sound rules. Racers that continue to use them will not meet the sound rule and will be disqualified from competition.
