Strong run ends with shredded tire for Jonathan Allard
By Gary Thomas
Cottage Grove, OR - August 29, 2007...After failing to make the feature at Elma on Monday, Chico, California’s Jonathan Allard came back on Wednesday night at the Cottage Grove Speedway and looked to be well on way to one of his best career World of Outlaw runs, only to have a tire blow out with just three laps left in the main event.
After qualifying 21st quickest to begin the night and transferring through his heat, Jonathan lined up 21st on the grid for the 40 lap main event aboard the GT Trends, K & N Filters, Red Line Oil No. 0. Multiple cautions at the start made the opening laps an endurance run, but when some green flag runs came forth Jonathan moved forward steadily. The Cottage Grove Speedway bullring was extremely racy on this night and JA cracked into the top 10 by the midway point. He continued marching forward and made passes of multiple drivers including Donny Schatz, Paul McMahan, Brad Sweet and Roger Crockett to move into the top five with less than 10 laps remaining in the race. He even closed in on the fourth place car at one point and began to dice it up with some of the top drivers in WOO competition as the laps wore down.
The party came to an end on lap 37, however, as Jonathan slowed to a stop with a shredded tire putting an end to the great run. The main event hard luck continued a trend of tough outings on the trip over the month of August. The speed is there, now we just need the luck to follow.
Jonathan and Williams Motorsports will now head South to California to compete this Saturday and Sunday in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series sanctioned Harvest Classic at the Calistoga Speedway. On Memorial Day weekend in May Jonathan picked up his very first victory at the ½ mile dirt track located in the Napa Valley wine country. The now 31 year-old driver claimed the win during the Tribute to Gary Patterson leading all 25 laps of the feature. His only other start at Calistoga this season came the night before the Tribute to GP at the Salute to Walter T Ross. That night saw Jonathan look to be well on his way to victory until running out of fuel as he was accepting the white flag.
Following the Harvest Classic this weekend, Jonathan will get ready to compete in the biggest sprint car event on the West Coast, the 54th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway next Thursday through Saturday.
