TRACY HINES GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE IN CANYON PRELIM
By Lance Jennings

PEORIA, AZ – NOVEMBER 16, 2014... Getting the jump on polesitter R.J. Johnson, Tracy Hines of Wilkinson, Indiana led all 30-laps to win Friday’s “Hall of Fame Classic” main event. Co-sanctioned with the USAC National Sprints, the $5,000 Canyon Speedway Park victory was the first Amsoil USAC/CRA triumph for the veteran driver. Chase Stockon, “The Demon” Damion Gardner, “The Madman” Robert Ballou, and Johnson followed Hines to the checkered flags.

Driving his #4 Carolina Nut Company / Hansen’s Welding DRC, Tracy Hines set a blistering pace from his outside front row starting spot. As slower traffic hindered the leader’s progress, Stockon and Gardner were able to cut into Hines’ advantage. However, timely yellow flags cleared the way and Tracy escaped from all challenges to claim the win in front of the large crowd. Earlier in the night, Hines qualified tenth out of the thirty-four racers in the pit area and scored third in his heat race.

Elizabethtown, Indiana’s Chase Stockon ran second in the Friday night main event after starting fourth. Racing his #32 Superior Tank & Trailer / Crescent Electric DRC, Stockon managed to hold off Gardner’s bid for second while chasing down Tracy Hines in the main event. The young driver was fifth quick in time trials and placed fourth in his heat race.

“The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord, California charged from sixth and slipped by Stockon for second until a red flag for Ryan Bernal erased the pass. Piloting Mark Alexander’s #4X Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike, Gardner took third in the main event, earned his tenth Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, and was second to Mike Martin in his heat race.

After winning both nights of the Budweiser 410 Oval Nationals at Perris, Westfield, Indiana’s “The Madman” Robert Ballou ran fourth at Canyon Speedway Park. Driving his #12X Blakesley Auto / Cliffon Services Maxim, Ballou qualified second overall, finished fourth in his heat race, and started fifth in the main event.

R.J. Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona claimed fifth in the 30-lap main event. Racing Bobby Martin’s #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Maxim, Johnson was twelfth fast in time trials and placed third in the Pyrotect Racing Cells / Weld Racing Heat Race #4.

Yorba Linda, California’s Matt Mitchell earned his first Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a thirteenth place finish from twenty-third. Piloting his #37 Campbell Bros. Storage / Pit Boss Jacks Maxim, Mitchell qualified ninth, placed sixth in his heat race, ran seventh in the semi-main, and took a provisional to start the feature.

“The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma, Arizona raced to his first USAC/CRA heat race win of the season. Claiming victory in the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1, the driver of the #16 PPG / Boulevard Truck Maxim was seventeenth quick in time trials and scored twenty-fourth in the main event after an early exit.

Avon, Indiana’s Jon Stanbrough won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Racing Michael Dutcher’s #37RW Griffin Propane / Indiana Underground Maxim, Stanbrough qualified eighteenth overall and took eighteenth in the Friday night main event. Jon added to the Hall of Fame Classic festivities by bringing a re-creation of Jack Kindoll’s #1 JFK Company Sprinter piloted by Jimmy Oskie from the late 1970s.

Andy Reinbold of Gilbert, Arizona earned the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #3 victory. Piloting Todd Underwood’s #19 AME Electrical / Ross Equipment Rentals Spike, Reinbold was twenty-third fast in time trials and was twenty-first in the main event.

Tucson, Arizona’s Jerry Coons Jr. won the night’s Pyrotect Racing Cells / Weld Racing Heat Race #4. Driving Gerry Cook’s #04G Lucas Oil / Beaver Stripes RSS, Coons qualified twentieth overall and scored eleventh in the main event from eighteenth.

Kevin Thomas Jr. of Cullman, Alabama won the 12-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main. Racing Keith Ford’s #73X Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Thomas was fourth fast in time trials, placed fifth in his heat race, and took sixth in the feature after starting eighth.
