Font is the term used for different styles/types of lettering.

Both the No. 15 and Schatz font, as well as the paint scheme designs on all Tony Stewart Racing entries are trademarked and property of TSR and Yak Graphics. The paint schemes, driver names, likenesses, sponsor brand marks or other logos cannot be used without written permission from Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises, LLC. Permission is also needed from each individual driver to use any of their marks, name or likeness. -- Tony Stewart Racing

It's like the Green Bay Packer "G" on the helmet. It is trademarked and cannot be used without permission of the Packers. The Georgia "G" on the helmet is the same and they have permission to use it. What is so hard to figure out? So, to answer your question, YES, a font can be trademarked....

Blame Theresa Earnhardt... she's the one that figured out to copyright Dales signature and the font his #3 was in... It keeps people from being able to sell accurate bootleg collectibles and such.
If somebody is building a model car for their own personal use or something to that effect nobody is ever going to sue them for using a copyrighted font. If somebody starts trying to profit from it that's when it becomes a problem.
THere are plenty of people with the ability to scan a pic of a particular car and recreate and graphics perfectly. Depending on what the OP plans to do with the font he should have no problem finding a way to get what he needs.
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.

Grambling State (college) and Cleveland (OH) Glenville (High School) both used the Packers-style "G" on their helmets - albeit different colors than GB. All are set inside an oval like GB - again, with a different color. Wonder if they both had to get permission, and from whom?
OP - if you are just making a model, I think you are fine, like someone else said.

The Packers started using the G in 1961. They have given permission to countless organizations to use the SHAPE of the letter. Little known fact is that the G stands for Great, not Green Bay. Kind of fitting for the team with the most NFL Championships. Vince Dooley, when coaching the Bulldogs, liked the logo the Packers had and asked permission to use it, and it was, in varied degrees, circles around it, stripes here and there etc, but the shape of the G has been the same.

Better to ask for foregiveness than permission.

I don't think so. You are not taking pictures and selling them, right?
