CHARLES DAVIS JR. SPRINTS TO CASA GRANDE TRIUMPH

CASA GRANDE, AZ – SEPTEMBER 22, 2014... Starting eleventh, Buckeye’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. took the lead from Stevie Sussex on lap ten and sailed to victory at Central Arizona Speedway. For Davis, the $1,500 USAC SouthWest Sprint Car win was his fourth triumph of the campaign. Matt Rossi, R.J. Johnson, Josh Pelkey, and “The Magic Man” Mike Martin rounded out the top-five drivers.

Racing the Massey Motorsports #50 RSS Industries / MP Environmental RSS, Charles Davis Jr. earned his second “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors of 2014. Before claiming his tenth career series win, the five-time state champion placed fourth in his heat race and ranked eleventh in the nightly passing points. Heading to Canyon Speedway Park’s “Brawl For It All,” Davis is second in points with twelve heat race victories, one semi-main win, twenty-two top-10 finishes, and 122 feature laps led.

Matt Rossi of Phoenix claimed second at Casa Grande after starting seventh. Piloting the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / Advanced Engine Components Spike, Rossi was third in his heat race and placed seventh in passing points. To date, Matt is fifth in the SouthWest standings with three heat race victories, two hard charger awards, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 28 feature laps led on the year.

Phoenix’s R.J. Johnson raced from tenth to score third at Central Arizona Speedway. Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson ran third in his heat race and was seated tenth in the nightly passing points. The defending champion has a 130-point advantage heading to Saturday night with ten feature wins, twelve heat race victories, one hard charger award, twenty-five top-10 finishes, and 177 feature laps led to his credit.

Josh Pelkey of Peoria led the second and third lap of the feature before taking fourth at the checkered flags. Racing Robbie & Gaye Allen’s #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts Maxim, Pelkey won the night’s third heat race and ranked fourth in passing points. Currently, the former ASCA Champion is third in the standings with three feature wins, five heat race victories, two hard charger awards, twenty-six top-10 finishes, and 56 feature laps led.

Yuma’s “The Magic Man” Mike Martin drove to fifth at Casa Grande after starting eighth. Piloting his #16 PPG Professional Paints / Desert Building Materials Maxim, Martin was second in his heat race to Stevie Sussex and was seated eighth in passing points. Heading to the “Brawl For It All,” the former Hall of Fame Classic winner is sixth in points with one feature win, four heat race victories, two semi-main wins, one hard charger award, seventeen top-10 finishes, and 31 feature laps led in 2014.

Brian Hosford of Gilbert took the win in the night’s first 10-lap heat race. Driving Berne Weber’s #32B Coffin & Trout Fine Jewelers / Invision Auto Body Spike, Hosford was the high point driver in passing points and scored twelfth in the main event. To date, Brian is eleventh in the standings with two heat race victories and four top-10 finishes.

Tempe’s Stevie Sussex earned his first heat race win of the season. Driving the #21AZ Pro Tech Coatings / KSE Custom Drywall entry, Sussex was third in passing points and led five laps of the main event before scoring fourteenth. In limited appearances, Sussex is sixteenth in points with one hard charger award and six top-10 finishes in the campaign.

This Saturday, September 27th, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series will return to action at Kevin Montgomery's Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona. The $2,500-to-win "Brawl For It All" is the second round of the "Grudge Series" with the USAC West Coast Sprints and will also feature Mini Sprints, Dwarf Cars, and AMA ModLites.
