Three Winners, Three Champions at Knoxville!

by Bill Wright

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, August 23, 2014 – In the end, the point leaders in each division held off the rest of the field, but it wasn’t easy.  Ian Madsen drove to a strong fourth place finish in the 410 A main won by Mark Dobmeier to take that championship.  Joe Beaver won the 360 driver title with a sixth place finish in a race won by Matt Moro.  The BDS Motorsports #1 team claimed the 360 owner’s title.  J Kinder needed a motor borrowed from the L&J Automotive #5J team to charge from 19th to fifth to claim the 305 championship.  Dustin Clark won that feature.

In the 410 25-lap feature, Brian Brown shot out from the pole ahead of Dobmeier and Brooke Tatnell early on.  On lap three, Tatnell got sideways in turn four, and Madsen made the move of the race evading him.  Tatnell also recovered.

Brown sliced through traffic as the first nineteen laps went nonstop.  Terry McCarl moved into third on lap four as the lead trio pulled away.  With nineteen laps in the books, Bronson Maeschen got upside down on the frontstretch.  When Glen Saville slowed to avoid him, Brown clipped him, causing front-end damage to his #21.

Dobmeier assumed the lead with McCarl in pursuit.  Madsen was passed by Dusty Zomer for third, but held onto fourth with a left wing side panel collapse.  He was followed by Craig Dollansky. Justin Henderson, Brown, Tatnell, Davey Heskin and Lynton Jeffrey rounded out the top ten.

Henderson set quick time on the night, and Danny Lasoski, Tasker Phillips and Maeschen won heats. Cole Wood flipped in his heat race, but was unhurt.

“It was a great racetrack,” said Dobmeier, who celebrated his thirteenth win here in Victory Lane. “There was a bottom, a top, and you could cut through the middle too.  My hat’s off to the track prep guys.  I was following Brian there in lapped traffic, and it’s too bad the red came out, because I think I was just getting in position and he was behind some cars.  It was unfortunate he got into the wreck, but I will take the win any way I can get it.”

“It’s just unbelievable,” said Madsen of his championship shared with the Bret Nehring #18 team. “I’m just speechless right now.  I haven’t taken a breath all night.  It will be nice to take a breath and celebrate with the team.  I can’t believe we pulled it off.  I have to thank Bret Nehring, Matt Barbara, the whole crew and our partners.”

Before a lap could be completed in the 20-lap 360 feature, Russ Hall and Alan Ambers contacted, sending the latter upside down.  Hall also suffered too much damage to continue.  Matt Moro shot out to the lead from outside of row one, ahead of Tasker Phillips and Dylan Peterson.  Four laps were in the books before Sawyer Phillips flipped on the backstretch.  He was uninjured.

When the green flew again, Moro led Tasker Phillips, Peterson, Nate Van Haaften and Carson McCarl.  McCarl used a slingshot move under Van Haaften and Peterson to grab third on the restart, while Billy Alley moved into fourth behind him.

Moro was steady out front and captured his eighth career 360 win ahead of Tasker Phillips, McCarl, Alley and Van Haaften.  Joe Beaver came home sixth and won his first 360 title, and Peterson, Tony Shilling, Jon Agan and Jarrod Schneiderman rounded out the top ten.  Henderson also set quick time in the 360 class, clinching the owner title for the BDS Motorsports #1 team.  Shilling, Cody Ledger and Agan won heat races.

“We’ve had a terrible, terrible year,” said Moro in Victory Lane.  “The car has been fast, but we’ve had stupid stuff going wrong.  We’ve had new parts breaking.  Everyone works really hard on this thing.  I like lapped traffic.  I feel like I’m on my game.”

“I didn’t want to leave any doubt on who the champion was this year,” said Beaver of his championship.  “I knew enough cars dropped out that we had a good shot at it, so I went for it.  The car was super-tight.  We battled it the whole way.  This feels great!  We were consistent.  Once we got the car figured out to go with the motor (Moyle supplied by Don Long).  Once we got our qualifying down, we were able to move up in the points.”

Dustin Clark led lap one from his pole position, but it was Kevin Hetrick who took command of the 15-lap 305 feature early on.  When Terri O’Connell slowed with three laps in the books, Hetrick led Clark, Mitchell Alexander, Mike Mayberry and Steve Breazeale.

J Kinder’s point lead over Breazeale was tenuous heading in, but he put on a charge in his borrowed power plant, and was already 12th (from 19th) by the third lap.  After another caution for debris a lap later, the rest of the event went non-stop.

Kinder was ninth by lap six, and Stacey Alexander moved by Mitchell Alexander for third on lap seven.  Clark found his way by Hetrick on lap nine, while Stacey Alexander followed him into second on lap eleven.

Clark would have to hold off Stacey Alexander on the last lap to grab his first ever Knoxville victory.  Hetrick was third, followed by Mitchell Alexander and Kinder, who grabbed fifth on lap 13. Breazeale, Mayberry, Jeff Wilke, McKenna Haase and Mike Philben rounded out the top ten.  Kinder posted quick time before losing his motor.  Philben, Haase and Stacey Alexander were heat race winners.

“(Stacey Alexander) was all over me, wasn’t he?” said Clark in Victory Lane.  “I could smell him. Man, we worked so hard to get here tonight.  A lot of the crew couldn’t make it here tonight…my Dad and my best friend Pat made it happen.  I can’t believe it!”

“I have to thank the Ball crew,” said Kinder of the L&J Automotive #5J team who lent him a motor. “I have to thank all the crews helping me.  This motor ran great.  We have to figure out what we’re going to do.  This feels great!  I can’t thank everyone enough.  I’m in shock right now.”

Why did Henderson scratch after qualifying in the 360's?

Also, what's the song that was sung before the National Anthem?

Few years ago it was :

20 G for the 410's..

8 G for the 360's..

And last night on the radio broadcast it was 1G for 305's.

Thanks for the info. I know they have a bunch of parts they give away at the awards party at the end of the year. Can anyone go to that or is it just the teams?

longdong,

Bryan Sunby came up to me after qualifying and said that they have earned enough points to win the 360 owner's championship and wanted to concentrate on the 410 title so they would be scratching their 360 for the remainder of the night...cz (knoxville tech)
