Lap traffic incident slows strong run for Brett Miller in Chico
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA - August 12, 2007...Chico’s Brett Miller looked to be well in position to picking up his third career 410 sprint car win this past Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway, but an encounter with lap traffic while leading the race dashed his chances of doing so.
The 18 year-old driver lined up in the fifth position during the night’s 25 lap main event aboard the Care Free Pools, Platinum Powder Coating, Wolfe Electric No. 1x. The track had started off the night being very fast and continued to be in the feature, but the bottom became very quick which made it the place to be. Holding true to his nickname of the Catfish, Brett rode the bottom of the 1/4 mile bullring and moved forward very quickly. On lap two he got under Kyle Hirst for second and the following lap took the lead from Tyler Spath.
Once in front Brett rocketed out to a commanding lead as the crew gave him a perfectly set up race car and the RPM racing engine was hitting on all cylinders. The tough part on this night was that an inordinate amount of cautions and reds were seen, which slowed the flow of the race. It didn’t seem to faze the youngster though as he doing a solid job and pulling away from the field each time he saw a restart. Once traffic came into play however, Brett would have to kick it into high gear as he had fellow youngster Kyle Hirst coming quickly. Lap 11 saw Brett get by one lap car off turn four, but unfortunately there was another car directly in front of that one and Brett had such a head of steam that he had to go higher than usual in turn one and he slipped off the corner spinning to a stop. Brett restarted the race and got back up to 11th by the finish in the River City Pools, A1A Performance Muffler, BR Motorsports, Kaeding Performance Maxim.
It was a tough way to end the night as Brett was clearly the class of the field, but sometimes traffic goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t. The Catfish just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and he couldn’t just follow the lappers, because he had some fast company headed his way. The only thing to do is move on and the positive thing to take away from the night is the fact that the JP’s Paint & Body, Al’s Concrete, Smartwebsales.com, Jandy Pools No. 1x was extremely fast and in position to win the race.
There are only two point races left in the 2007 season at Silver Dollar Speedway and the next to last race will be this Friday night. Brett will go into the event sitting fifth in the current Silver Dollar Speedway point standings. Stop by the rig after the races to check out our T-shirts and say hi.
