By Lance Jennings

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ – JUNE 30, 2014... Racing past Mike Colegrove on lap nine, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye led the rest of the way to earn his third USAC SouthWest Sprint win of the year. For Davis, the $1,500 triumph at Prescott Valley Speedway was his ninth career series victory ahead of Colegrove, Mike Martin, Josh Shipley, and Matt Rossi.

Piloting the Massey Motorsports #50 RSS Industries / MP Environmental RSS, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. ended R.J. Johnson’s win streak at three consecutive victories. Prior to the main event, the five-time state champion scored third in his heat race and placed sixth in the nightly passing points. “Chargin” Charles left Prescott Valley ranked second in points with nine heat race victories, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 79 feature laps led.

After leading the first eight circuits, Peoria’s Mike Colegrove had to settle for second in the 30-lap main event. Driving his #17M Precision Tile / Ellis Race Cars entry, Colegrove ran second to Michael Curtis in his heat race and sat fifth in passing points. Heading to Queen Creek on July 12th, Mike is eighth in the standings with two heat race victories and six top-10 finishes in the campaign.

“The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma claimed third at Prescott Valley after starting sixth. Racing his #16 PPG Professional Paints / Desert Building Materials Maxim, Martin won the program’s second 8-lap heat race and was the high point driver entering the feature. The former “Hall of Fame Classic” winner is fifth in points with five heat race victories, one semi-main win, one hard charger award, ten top-10 finishes, and one feature lap led in 2014.

Peoria’s Josh Shipley took fourth at the checkered flags. Piloting Bob Bishop’s #2 Beaver Stripes / RSS Industries machine, Shipley ran second to Mike Martin in his heat race and sat fourth in passing points. The Challenge Cup Sprint Champion left Prescott Valley ranked fifteenth in the standings with one hard charger award and four top-10 finishes on the season.

Matt Rossi of Phoenix ran fifth in the Prescott Valley main event after starting eighth. Driving the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / Advanced Engine Components Spike, Rossi scored fifth in his heat race and placed eighth in passing points. Heading to Arizona Speedway, Matt is sixth in the point chase with one heat race victory, two hard charger awards, and eight top-10 finishes to his credit.

Phoenix’s “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with an eleventh place run from fifteenth. Racing his #7K Woodland Auto Display / Weld Racing Maxim, St. James scored eighth in his heat race and placed fifteenth in the nightly passing points. Bruce left Prescott Valley ranked eleventh in points with two top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Michael Curtis of Cottonwood raced to victory in the night’s first 8-lap heat race.
