Friday night will be the first time OCRS has competed at the facility since current series point’s leader Danny Smith scored a bit of a controversial win on May 5, 2012. On that night, there was a perception that Smith, while leading the feature, clipped an infield cone knocking it onto the track, which caused a yellow flag. Some felt Smith should have been placed at the rear on the ensuing restart. Smith went on to win and post race video revealed it was another competitor that actually knocked the cone onto the track.
In 2011, Collinsville Oklahoma’s Dean Drake Jr. pulled off an upset when he won on the Independence Day holiday weekend. “South Coffeyville has always been a track that has produced great racing for our series,” commented OCRS president Barry Grabel. “The track has a different layout than most and there is just enough banking that the top and bottom of the track can produced great side by side racing. We look forward to our return to the South Coffeyville track this week to put on another great show for the fans.”
While Smith leads the overall point’s chase for the Harold Leep Championship trophy, Morton, by virtue of his win last week, leads the non-wing point standings but only has a single point margin over Brian McClelland (93-92). Smith is third with 89 points. Kyle Clark (85) and Michael Bookout (81) round out the top five non wing point earners.
