USAC/CRA SPRINTS PREPARE FOR WATSONVILLE AND PETALUMA SWING
By Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – JUNE 20, 2014… The cars and stars of the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series are gearing up for a special “Northern California swing” to Watsonville and Petaluma. With both races paying $2,750-to-win and $350-to-start, John Prentice's Ocean Speedway will host the Friday, June 27th, “USAC/CRA Night at the Races.” The following night, June 28th, the USAC/CRA 410 Sprints will travel to Rick Faeth’s Petaluma Speedway for the “Flowmaster & Lumberjack’s Restaurant Night.”

Since July 2010, six Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car races have been held at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman and Mike Spencer are tied for the series lead with two Watsonville wins and “The Cadillac” Cody Williams set the 1-lap qualifying track record of 12.701 on August 10, 2012. The “USAC/CRA Night at the Races” will also showcase 4-Bangers, American Stocks, Dwarf Cars, and IMCA Sport Mods. The Pit Gate will open at 1:00pm, the Spectator Gates will open at 4:30pm, and Racing is scheduled for 6:00pm.

Petaluma Speedway will feature the USAC/CRA 410 Sprints for the third time in series history. On June 20, 2009, “Dynamite” David Cardey won the series debut at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds. Mike Spencer claimed the 30-lap main event and set the 1-lap qualifying track record of 13.821 on June 19, 2010. The “Flowmaster & Lumberjack’s Restaurant Night” card will also present Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, and 600 Sprints. The Pit Gate officially opens at 3:00pm, Spectator Gates will open at 4:00pm, Time Trials will begin at 5:00pm, and Racing is set for 6:30pm.

NOTICE TO COMPETITORS: Ocean Speedway and Petaluma Speedway have a strict 90db at 100 feet state mandated sound rule and the Flowmaster “Suitcase” (Part 53545-USAC) is the track legal muffler. If the sound levels are broken, the racer will be disqualified and not allowed to compete. In addition, tarps are mandatory under all race cars in the pit area at Petaluma. The tarps must stick out at least one foot on each side.

Heading to the eighth point race, “The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord has a 93-point advantage over the competition. At Perris on June 14th, the pilot of Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike posted his 56th career Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award and charged to seventh after suffering a flat tire. To date, “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car Driver” has five main event wins, three Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, five heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 99 feature laps led. “The Demon” leads all USAC/CRA drivers with 51 career wins and will have his sights on his bid for a third championship.

Huntington Beach’s Nic Faas is second in the USAC/CRA point standings. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Faas scored ninth at Perris Auto Speedway. Currently, the 2008 Rookie of the Year has two heat race victories and six top-10 finishes in the campaign. With 10 main event wins to his credit, Nic will be looking to gain valuable points by adding the Watsonville and Petaluma trophies to his collection.

Mike Spencer of Temecula sits third in the championship points. At Perris, the driver of Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim earned his first Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fifth place run from twenty-third. To date, the five-time champion has three Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 21 feature laps led to his credit. Mike has 34 USAC/CRA wins and will have his sights on the $2,750 victories at Watsonville and Petaluma.

After leading all 30-laps to win the June 14th main event, Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell has climbed to fourth in the point chase. Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / ART Enterprises Maxim, Mitchell has one heat race victory, four top-10 finishes and 33 feature laps led on the season. With six career USAC/CRA wins, the former USAC Western Midget Rookie of the Year will be looking for his first Watsonville and Petaluma triumphs.

Brody Roa of Huntington Beach is fifth in the point standings. Racing the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Maxim, Roa took sixth in the Perris main event. To date, the 2012 Most Improved Driver has one heat race victory, one Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main win, one Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award and five top-10 finishes. Brody has 1 USAC/CRA triumph and will have his sights on taking Lee & Norma Leonard’s car to Watsonville and Petaluma victories.

Currently eleventh in points, Yorba Linda’s Logan Williams leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Snohomish, Washington’s Gary Taylor, Cody Swanson of Norco, and Verdemont Heights’ Chris Gansen are also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Richard Vander Weerd, Jake Swanson, Austin Williams, “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman, Jace Vander Weerd, Ryan Bernal, Marty Hawkins, and more

Per USAC/CRA rules, all fuel-injected 410 and 360 powered sprint cars must run the Hoosier 105/16 Medium Right Rear Tire and all four corners must be Hoosier. Cars must pass a tech inspection and one-way radios are mandatory for drivers. USAC/CRA charges a $25 entry fee to all competitors, which includes a transponder rental. Carbureted spec sprints are welcome to race with USAC/CRA and can still use their track legal Hoosier tires.
