KISS at Tri-State Speedway, or You Too Can “Do the Double”
May 20, 2014 – The King of Indiana Sprint Series headlines at Tri-State Speedway, Sunday, and provides serious racing fans the opportunity to catch two major racing events live, the same day. With the Indy 500 taking the green flag just after noon, there is a great evening show available for those who need a little more pepper in their gumbo.
Tri-State Speedway has scheduled the big co-sanctioned King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) and MSCS sprint cars on Sunday evening. The Tri-State management has even arranged for the local time to be on the Central clock, so there is an extra hour allowed for travel. Now the great State of Indiana has opened enough of the new I-69 Interstate to accommodate the trip from the 500-miler to the KISS race. Local sprint car fans already know how to get to Haubstadt and Tri-State Speedway, but some visitors may need some help.
After getting away from Indy, use whatever navigational aids you have available and point toward Scotland, Indiana. One good way is to take Ind 37 South to Bloomington and then pick up Ind 45 South. You will run into the signs for I-69. Another route would be to take I-70 West to Ind 67, and from Bloomfield follow the signs to I-69. Once on I-69, it is a smooth, straight, 53-mile ride to Exit 22. Turn right, and when you get to US 41, turn right. It's only about 5 miles from I-69 to the track. There's also the traditional route of taking I-70 to Terre Haute and then US-41 south to Haubstadt.
The KISS racing will be worth the trip. Kokomo’s Shane Cottle claimed wins in the first two races, at Bloomington and Kokomo Speedways, to open a small advantage. Last weekend it was Avon’s Jon Stanbrough collecting his 20th KISS series victory at Lawrenceburg. Through these events, two-time King Brady Short, of Bedford, has been breathing down Cottle’s neck, and is clearly in striking distance. Daron Clayton has won three of the last six KISS races at Tri-State, the others were claimed by Stanbrough, Short and Jeff Bland Jr.
Defending MSCS champion Stanbrough and Robert Ballou top the standings for that series, while Clayton and Hunter Schuerenberg captured MSCS feature wins. The KISS/MSCS event at Tri-State will be the third of three consecutive nights of racing for MSCS.
Sunday's program also includes Tri-State's UMP modifieds on the racing program. The race track is located on US 41, in Haubstadt, 16 miles north of Evansville. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30, with racing at 7:30. General admission tickets are $20, tickets for student are just $15, and ages 12 and under are admitted free. Pit passes are $30. The 30-lap KISS main event will pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start. The point fund is a total of $4,200, with the series champion earning $1,200. Second in points will collect $900, and third through fifth will receive $800, $700 and $600.
