Kaley Gharst – Top Five in Huset’s Opener! (Bill W) May 19, 2014 – Kaley Gharst and the Sandvig #7 team got on track at the Huset’s Speedway opener near Brandon, South Dakota last night. After starting eighth in the feature, the Decatur, Illinois driver would charge to a fourth place finish on a track that yielded rubber at the end. Plenty of opportunities await the team in South Dakota this weekend as they make preparations to get back in action. Kaley would time in ninth quick. “We were a little tight in qualifying,” he says. “We scrubbed off a little too much speed.” Starting up front, he would run away with his heat race. “We changed a few things for the heat and the track came back to us,” says Kaley. “We started outside the front row, and we were able to come away with the win. We needed to draw either an eight or a ten for the feature inversion and we drew a six.” The inversion saw him start outside of row four for the main event. “We ended up starting eighth in the feature with Lynton (Jeffrey) dropping out,” says Kaley. “We didn’t get that great a start the first handful of laps, but we got a red flag and we were able to make some adjustments.” The team’s work paid off, and Kaley started a move towards the front. “We had a good restart there, and we were able to get up to fifth,” he says. “(Terry) McCarl had a wing collapse, and that gave us fourth. The track started taking rubber at that point, and we kind of fell in line and ran fourth at the checkers.” The team is weighing their options about this weekend’s racing. The Loren Barstad Memorial has a series of races starting at I-90 Speedway in Hartford, South Dakota Saturday night. The team will decide whether to run the two final nights of the series at Huset’s on Sunday and Monday, or run the 410 again Sunday night.
