8/6/07

Southern Iowa Speedway

Oskaloosa, IA

Musco Lighting Front Row Challenge

27 cars

Jonathan Allard (15th car out to time) set quick time on the lightning fast surface at 15.620 seconds. Terry McCarl (24th car out) was second quick, followed by Daryn Pittman (20th), Brian Brown (22nd), Dusty Zomer (9th), Donny Schatz (12th), Rob Chaney (8th), Bronson Maeschen (6th), Sam Hafertepe Jr. (13th) and Larry Pinegar II (10th). Several cars left the racetrack after a 3 1/2 hour delay due to an afternoon downpour of 2". Those leaving before competition began included NASCAR's Kasey Kahne.

Front Row Challenge finish (started), 25 laps: 1. Rob Chaney 24H (4) 2. Bronson Maeschen 96 (2) 3. Sam Hafertepe Jr. 15H (7) 4. Ryan Farrell 3s (20) 5. Chad Hillier 5c (9) 6. Jesse Hockett 75 (11) 7. Kaley Gharst 3 (14) 16. Donny Schatz 15 (25) 17. Tony Shilling 47T (12) 18. Jonathan Allard 0 (5) 19. Bruce White 96au (24) 20. Ray Allen Kulhanek 41 (21) 21. Terry McCarl 24 (3) 22. Rob Chaney of Wooster, Ohio, emerged victorious in the $5,000 to win Front Row Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday, August 6. He made his winning pass of Bronson Maeschen on a lap fifteen restart after an improbable chain of events, starting with an afternoon deluge of rain and hours of preparation. A 20-minute afternoon downpour caused a four hour delay in order to prep the racing surface and pit areas. Even with the hard work involved, cars pitted in all corners of the Mahaska County fairgrounds and heats didn't shove off until 11:30 p.m. local time.

The hearty crowd saw an entertaining feature. With an option of going to the back of the 25-lap event, World of Outlaws champion, Donny Schatz, was encouraged by the fans, and chose to start at the back and take a shot at the $50,000 to win challenge. Daryn Pittman had other ideas, and the pole-sitter flew out to the early lead before a lap five caution for the stopped cars of Brian Brown and driver/promoter, Terry McCarl.

Schatz had passed twelve cars in the first five laps, moving into twelfth and he looked poised to take a shot at the big loot on the restart. Pittman again paced the field for the next five laps, and Schatz picked up four more spots before the red flag came out for Tony Shilling.who flipped his sprinter in turn four. He was uninjured, but done for the night.

On lap fifteen, disaster struck for both the leader and Schatz, as both slowed to a stop. Schatz was victim of a broken torsion arm and ended his charge from 25th in seventh. Also bowing out of competition was Kaley Gharst, who had charged from 14th to fourth. Maeschen had inherited the lead ahead of Chaney, but yielded to the Buckeye State native when the green flag dropped.

"This is awesome!" said the driver of the Randy Hammer #24H. "I thought we may run out of fuel there with all those cautions. This gives us some momentum heading into the Knoxville Nationals!"

JEI, Schnee, J&J and Eagle chassis were awarded to drivers over the course of the night. Those lucky drivers awarded new cars included heat winners Shilling, Jesse Hockett and Kaley Gharst. 2006 King of California, Jonathan Allard set quick time on the half-mile at 15.620 seconds.

Tatnell had a tremendous run going (18th to 3rd) when he dropped out on lap 22. Farrell was the hard-charger (20th to 4th).

Heats were largely uneventful up front, though Schatz provided some excitement in the third heat, providing the only real passing.

Heat one (started): 1. Shilling (2) 2. Brown (3) 3. Pinegar (1) 4. Allard (6) 5. Chaney (4) 6. Spath (5) 7. Moore (8) 8. Kulhanek (7) DNS - Jeffrey

Heat two (started): 1. Hockett (2) 2. Baldaccini (1) 3. Maeschen (4) 4. Hillier (3) 5. Zomer (5) 6. McCarl (6) 7. Phillips (8) 8. Jackson (7)

Heat three (started): 1. Gharst (2) 2. Weuve (1) 3. Hafertepe (4) 4. Schatz (5) 5. Pittman (6) 6. Tatnell (9) 7. Malsam (3) 8. Shepherd (8) 9. Farrell (7) 10. White (10)

I thought this show was supposed to follow the ASCS/Chili Bowl format of ditching time trials for the draw/passing point heat and qualifiers?

in case it gets missed on the other thread..........again I will ask:

why did so many drivers not race? It's not like most of em had anything better to do. For pete's sake they were handing out chassis to HEAT RACE WINNERS! So what is the REAL DEAL that went down with this show? this is baffling to me. don't matter whether it's 6pm or midnight. like i said if you won your heat you won a chassis. something had ot have gone down for so many to completely forgo that.

All the fans stayed - they didn't have anything else to do. they were there for the race. you would think it would be relatively the same for the drivers..................

And geez Kaley Gharst won a chassi?. in the last 5 dyas he has won a reg. 410 feature against great competition (like TK).........a 360 nationals preliminary............the Brodix Tournament of Champions..........and now an american made chassis - heck I think he was even in the top 5 or top 10 for the 360 finale. the guy is on fire! what a streak for that race team. all against some of the best competition in the nation. Thats a lot of great momentum going into the 410 nationals.

Race ended @12:50. Most of the teams that didnt race were the ones that had gotten their before the rain and had to be pulled out of the pits.

Congrats to Rob Chaney, making Ohio proud once again.

I remember seeing Rob win BOTH with a wing and without at the Jack Hewitt Challenge a few years back. Could history repeat itself at Osky??

Watch out for this cat in K'ville too.

thats commendable. if track and pits were that bad it must have been some sight to see.
