SHON DESKINS SCORES FIRST USAC SOUTHWEST WIN AT PRESCOTT VALLEY
By Lance Jennings

PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ – MAY 5, 2014... Leading all 30-laps at Prescott Valley Speedway, Shon Deskins of Phoenix earned his first career USAC SouthWest Sprint Car triumph. With Saturday’s $1,500 main event win, Shon became the fourth different driver to claim victory in the four point races to date. “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., Josh Pelkey, Mike Colegrove, and Chris Bonneau were the top-five drivers in Prescott Valley’s series debut.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Shon Deskins dominated the Prescott Valley feature in his #20 Performance Plus / Spike Chassis entry. After scoring third in his heat race, Deskins ranked fifth in passing points out of the twenty racers in attendance. After celebrating his win, the veteran driver has taken over second in the point standings with two heat race victories and seven top-10 finishes on the year.

Buckeye’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. raced to second at Prescott Valley from the sixth starting spot. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / MP Environmental RSS, Davis won the night’s third 8-lap heat race and was the high point driver entering the main event. The five-time state champion is currently third in the championship points with one feature win, five heat race victories, eight top-10 finishes, and 11 feature laps led in 2014.

After scoring third in the main event, Josh Pelkey of Peoria has reclaimed the USAC SouthWest point lead. Piloting Robbie and Gaye Allen’s #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts Maxim, Pelkey ran second in his heat race and ranked third in passing points. To date, the former ASCA Champion has one feature win, one heat race victory, two hard charger awards, ten top-10 finishes, and 45 feature laps led.

Peoria’s Mike Colegrove took fourth in the Prescott Valley main event. Racing his #17M Precision Tile / Ellis Race Cars entry, Colegrove won the night’s first 8-lap heat race and was fourth in passing points. Climbing to ninth in the championship points, Mike has two heat race victories and three top-10 finishes on the season.

Chris Bonneau of Phoenix scored fifth in the SouthWest debut at Prescott Valley. Driving his #78 Priced Right Auto Sales Triple X, Bonneau placed fourth in his heat race and claimed sixth in passing points. As this writing goes to press, Chris ranks sixteenth in points with one top-10 finish in the campaign.

Peoria’s Josh Shipley earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a sixth place finish after starting twelfth. Piloting Bob Bishop’s #2 Beaver Stripes / RSS Industries machine, Shipley ran third in his heat race and ranked twelfth in passing points. The defending Challenge Cup Champion is sixth in the point standings with three top-10 finishes to his credit.

Matt Rossi of Phoenix raced to victory in the program’s second 8-lap heat race. Racing the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / Advanced Engine Components Spike, Rossi was second in passing points and claimed seventh in the main event. Matt left Prescott Valley fifth in series points with three top-10 finishes in 2014.
