KISS Takes On Kokomo Sunday
May 3, 2014 – With one race in the record book, the 2014 King of Indiana Sprint Series heads to Kokomo Speedway on Sunday, for the second leg in the weekend double dip. Shane Cottle has a narrow lead over Brady Short, on the strength of his victory Friday, at Bloomington Speedway.
While Shane Cottle has a KISS win at Kokomo, seven years ago, Brady Short does not. The Bedford wheelman is on the hunt for a third KISS championship, and a victory at the northern Indiana oval would be a giant step in that direction. Last year, Short finished fifth in the Kokomo round, and Cottle was seventh, while Robert Ballou claimed the victory.
The points are tight and there are a dozen top drivers positioned to chase the KISS crown. After leading the first twenty circuits at Bloomington, Dalten Gabbard is third in the standings, followed by Jerry Coons Jr., Casey Shuman, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Ballou.
Robert Ballou was the eighth different KISS winner at Kokomo Speedway, and no one has won more than one event there. Will this be the year that Ballou, Cottle, or one of the other previous winners repeats, or will there be a ninth name on that list? Kokomo will open the pit gate at 3 pm on Sunday and the front gate at 4, with hot laps at 6:30. General admission is $20 and kids 10 and under are free with a paying adult, while pit passes are $30. The Sunday night racing program includes Kokomo's Street Stocks and Thunder Cars. For more information, visit the Kokomo Speedway website at www.kokomospeedway.net.
The 30-lap KISS main event will pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start. The point fund is a total of $4,200, with the series champion earning $1,200. Second in points will collect $900, and third through fifth will receive $800, $700 and $600.
Gas City/I-69 Speedway will compete their KISS event on the following Friday. The next weekend, KISS will travel to the southeastern corner of the state for Lawrenceburg's competition. As has become their tradition, Tri-State Speedway will host the KISS sprinters on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, just hours after the completion of the Indy 500. The 2014 KISS championship will be finalized at Paragon Speedway on Saturday, May 31 at Paragon Speedway, however at this time the Terre Haute Action Track hasn't announced whether they will reschedule the KISS event rained out last weekend.
KISS Points after Round 1: 1. Shane Cottle 180, 2. Brady Short 175, 3. Dalten Gabbard 170, 4. Jerry Coons Jr. 165, 5. Casey Shuman 160, 6. Kevin Thomas Jr. 156, 7. Robert Ballou 152, 8. Ethan Barrow 148, 9. Carson Short 144, 10. Bub Cummings 140
