AMSOIL USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS RETURN TO PERRIS SATURDAY
By Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – APRIL 28, 2014... The cars and stars of the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will invade Don Kazarian’s Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday, May 3rd. The fourth point race of the campaign will also feature the PAS Senior Sprints, PAS Young Gun Sprints, and the winged California Lightning Sprints. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm, with racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" to begin at 7:00pm.

NOTICE TO USAC/CRA COMPETITORS: The Hoosier 105/16 Medium is the ONLY legal right rear tire and all four corners must be Hoosier tires. Fuel-injected iron-block 360 sprints must use the Hoosier 105/16 Medium and carbureted spec sprints can still use their local track legal Hoosier tires with USAC/CRA.

Since March 2004, 162 USAC/CRA Sprint Car races have been held at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds and 30 drivers have claimed victories. Two-time champion and current point leader “The Demon” Damion Gardner leads all drivers with 28 “home track” wins followed by Mike Spencer (24), “The Cowboy” Tony Jones (19), “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman (17), and Nic Faas (9). Faas holds the 1-lap qualifying track record of 15.833 set on February 25, 2012.

Entering Saturday’s contest, “The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord holds a 31 point advantage over the competition. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / J&D Performance Spike, Gardner is the hottest driver on the circuit, winning all three previous races (2/28 Canyon, 3/15 Perris, and 4/12 Perris). To date, “The Demon” also has one Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, two heat race victories, and 45 feature laps led to his credit. “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car Driver” will have his sights on his series leading 50th career win and tying his record of four consecutive victories in 2005.

Huntington Beach’s Nic Faas is second in the championship point chase. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Faas ran fourth at Perris Auto Speedway on April 12th. The former USAC Western Midget Champion has one heat race victory and three top-10 finishes on the season. This Saturday, Nic will be looking for his 11th career USAC/CRA feature win.

Mike Spencer of Temecula has climbed to third in the point standings. Driving Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer earned his second Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award (tying Gardner’s record of 54) and claimed second in the April 12th “So Cal Sprint Car Spectacular.” In addition, the five-time champion has one heat race victory, two top-10 finishes, and 11 feature laps led on the season. Mike will have his sights on earning his 35th career USAC/CRA victory on Saturday night.

Yorba Linda’s Matt Mitchell has risen to fourth in the USAC/CRA point standings. Piloting his #37 MPD Racing / A.R.T. Enterprises Maxim, Mitchell led the first three laps of the April 12th main event before taking third at the checkered flags. At press time, the former USAC Western Midget Rookie of the Year has three top-10 finishes in the campaign. At Perris, Matt will be looking to add his sixth career USAC/CRA feature winning trophy to his collection.

After finishing sixth at Perris on April 12th, Gary Taylor of Snohomish, Washington sits fifth in the point standings. Racing Gerry Cook’s #04G Lucas Oil / Beaver Stripes RSS, Taylor has two top-10 finishes and 23 feature laps led on the season. At press time, the versatile driver has been competing in the Midwest and may miss Saturday’s action at Perris Auto Speedway.

Currently fourteenth in the standings, Yorba Linda’s Logan Williams leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Norco’s Cody Swanson and Chris Gansen of Verdemont Heights are also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Brody Roa, “The Kruser” Cory Kruseman, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Jake Swanson, Austin Williams, A.J. Bender, Richard Vander Weerd, “Super” Rickie Gaunt, David Bezio, J.J. Ercse, Verne Sweeney, Seth Wilson, Jace Vander Weerd, “The Ripper” Rip Williams, and more.
