Abreu Ready For First Tour Of Duty In Florida
Rutherford, California. Battle hardened from the 2013 season in which he ran over 100 races nationally, California driver Rico Abreu will embark on his first ever attempt to take on the best in winged 410 and 360 racing when outdoor action begins in Florida this week. Wheeling the Abreu Vineyards Paul Silva wrenched machines once again in the upcoming season, the little leadfoot looks to keep alive a streak of impressive performances that closed out 2013 and began 2014.
While the Florida schedule will only be contested in winged sprint cars, Abreu has recently emerged as one of the top midget wheelmen on the planet. A trip down under to the prestigious Midget World Series at Western Springs Speedway in Auckland, New Zealand just before the New Year dawned saw Rico lead many laps and contend for the win in all three meetings.
At the recently concluded Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he drove from 17th to fourth in his preliminary night feature, just missing an automatic ticket into Saturday’s big show. During the final day of competition Abreu romped non-stop to a large margin of victory over Kyle Larson in the stacked B main, then to advance to fourth from 13th in the A, before a late quick spin relegated him to an 11th place finish in the final rundown.
Looking ahead to the Florida racing on tap for the next several weeks, Abreu will open the slate of events at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, as the All Star Circuit of Champions kicks off their season over three nights February 6, 7, and 8. Action moves to Volusia Speedway Park in De Leon Springs for five straight nights as the All Stars open the first two nights beginning Wednesday February 12, before making way for the World of Outlaws to take center stage for their season opening races on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Beginning Thursday February 20th the Rutherford, CA hotshoe will take to East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa for the three night King of The 360 Sprints that culminates with the Ronald Laney Memorial.
Anticipation of running new venues against top flight competition has Abreu more than ready to get started. “I can’t wait to get down to Florida and get going,” said the 12 time winner in 2013. “It’s always exciting to get to new tracks. Besides that, the guys I will be racing against are the best in the business. I know it’s going to be tough, but I think having Paul Silva beside me will be a great asset as he has been down there before. We just need to qualify well and get some breaks, and maybe we can get a win or two. All I know is I’m ready to get the season started.”
Abreu’s racing efforts are sponsored by Abreu Vineyards, ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems, Stadelhofer Construction, FK Rod Ends, Schoenfeld Headers, Brown & Miller Plumbing, BR Motorsports, and All Star Performance.
