King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series Notes & Info

Round 16 at Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway “Harry Talbot Memorial”

Tulare, California – Saturday September 21

What:

The King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series rolls to the Central Valley this weekend with its final appearance of the season at Steve Faria’s bad-to-the-bone Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway on Saturday night. It marks Round 16 in the battle for the KWS crown and will be the third time that the series competes at the Tulare County Fairgrounds based facility this year. It’s also the final chance for drivers to get ready for the fast approaching “Trophy Cup” that will be held at the track on October 17, 18 & 19.

Driving for locally based Roth Motorsports out of Fresno, Kyle Hirst holds 42-point lead over Jonathan Allard in the King of the West 410 title chase and will be in search of victory at the Thunderbowl on Saturday. The 25-year-old Sacramento resident scored a pair of runner up finishes back in May with the series in Tulare and was also the winner last October of the 50-lap “Trophy Cup” final on Saturday night. Hirst has claimed two victories with KWS this season.

Defending King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series champion Allard chopped 13-markers off Hirst’s lead in the standings following his third place finish last weekend at Reno Tahoe Fernley Speedway. The Chico veteran leads the series with four wins on the season and will be gunning for a strong night at the Thunderbowl to try and inch closer to Hirst. Allard’s career highlight at the one-third mile clay oval came in 2010 when he captured the “Trophy Cup” that season.

Sacramento’s Willie Croft continued his consistent season last Saturday at Reno Tahoe Fernley Speedway by finishing fifth in the main event while driving his own No. 29 Sprinter. “Double Down” has scored a pair of victories so far this year and tallied a best finish of fifth over Memorial Day weekend at the Thunderbowl. Croft goes into the weekend sitting third in the King of the West standings.

Fresno’s Craig Stidham picked up his best finish of the season last weekend in Fernley and will be searching for victory on Saturday in Tulare at what is a home track for him and his team. The former Rebel Cup Series champ ran an impressive second to Tim Kaeding last week and also set fast time for the third time this year to open the night. Stidham continues to maintain the fourth spot in KWS points.

Rounding out the top-five in the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series standings is 2004 champion Jason Statler of Grass Valley, who has been very consistent as of late. The “Big Guy” has ran sixth or better in four of the last five KWS events held in his familiar DF Rios No. 00 mount. Other top-10 drivers in the points set for Saturday include 13-time series champion & Hall of Famer Brent Kaeding, Doug Gandy, Chad Compton and Carl Droivold.

The always thrilling Tim Kaeding will also be on hand this Saturday looking to get tuned up for the 20th annual “Trophy Cup” in October. The San Jose wheel-man is a three-time winner of the Trophy Cup and is always good for a show at the Thunderbowl Raceway. In March the two-time KWS champ beat the World of Outlaws during opening night of the double-header weekend and also captured last Saturday’s KWS Series event in Fernley, Nevada.

Two-time World of Outlaws champion and recent “Gold Cup Race of Champions” winner Jason Meyers will also invade the Thunderbowl on Saturday in the Tarlton & Son Inc. machine. The Clovis veteran captured last year’s “Trophy Cup” and in May swept the two-night King of the West Sprint Car Series weekend. Meyers has shown that he hasn’t skipped a beat despite running a limited schedule over the last couple seasons and will be tough to beat on Saturday night.

Other drivers expected will include Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi & Carson Macedo, Scotts Valley’s Evan Suggs, Campbell’s Bud Kaeding, Hanford’s DJ Netto, Grass Valley’s Pat Harvey, Laton’s Geoffrey Strole, Auburn’s Richard Brace Jr., Elk Grove’s Bobby & Sean McMahan, Visalia’s Cory Eliason & Danny Faria Jr, Tipton’s Mike Faria, Coarsegold’s Scott Parker, Merced’s Mark Barroso and more.

The night of action this weekend also pays tribute to Harry Talbot, who was very instrumental at the Merle Stone Chevrolet Thunderbowl Raceway. Talbot was a right-hand-man to promoter Steve Faria and did everything he could to ensure things went smoothly at the Thunderbowl. He unfortunately passed away this year after an illness and we will be remembering him on Saturday at the “Harry Talbot Memorial.”

When:

On Saturday September 21 the front grandstand gate will open at 4pm. Hot laps are scheduled for 6pm, with qualifying at 6:30pm and racing anticipated to start around 7pm. Also on hand will be the always exciting USAC West Coast Wingless 360’s, which always makes for a terrific combination Sprint Car show.
