All that talk talk about big money, crew chiefs and the rest of it along with the Woo points crap all sounds like NASCAR to me.....Traditional non wing racing is where skill is as and can be more important than the money.

Dave Darland is leading the USAC boy's in points with a family owned car sponsored by my friends Steve Stroud's racers Advantage store in Phoenix AZ . http://racersadvantagestore.com/ His Parker Store is right next door...http://www.abcmotorsports.com/racersadvantagepressrelease.htm

“It’s a great night. It’s a small team that I driver for, the Phillips,” Darland said. “They don’t have a lot of money. They just put a lot of effort into it. They put their heart and soul into this racing and they do a great job. It’s a great night for me and the team.”

Doug Auld I read your article "There're All Sprint Cars" in Sprint Car & Midget magazine this month and they may be and some driver's have excelled at both, but hey, a modified Sprinter is just that, a Modified Sprinter.

 Duck Kenny, duck!

I like non wing and winged, but USAC has a problem.  They can not  schedual a race and for sure have a full field of cars.  Burlington had 20 cars, but several were local 360 cars.  What is the problem, lack of cars in midgets, sprints and silver crown.  Why would a promoter schedual a USAC race not knowing if he will get 12 cars or what.  Do not get me wrong, I like USAC but they have a big problem.

I live in Dallas & just drove 5 hrs to see USAC for the 2nd time this year... great racing (I flew to PA for USAC vs. Posse).  Darland is a show all to himself IMO.

I really miss the old USAC/CRA tour of Texas & Oklahoma... man did I see some awesome races, drivers & teams!

A USAC sprint/midget doubleheader at TMS on Nascar weekends would be a sure thing for a promoter.  Sure wish Eddie would jump onboard.

One of the Houston area tracks, Devil's Bowl, I-30, Riverside... there's a killer tour right there without even going to Oklahoma where racing is big.  Salina Highbanks?  Count me in.   4 nights+... more cars may make the trip.

Problems or not... USAC nonwing racing is amazing to see in person.  I'm ready for the next 2 nights!

No question that USAC has made some of the stupidest moves in the history of the sport with the Silver crown deal being at the top of the list but hey, it's still the road to what's called the big time nowadays. You will not find the road to NASCAR in Pennsylvaniia or with a wing on anywhere for that matter.

You might think about coming on up to AZ for the Hall of Fame races the weekend before the Ovals. The USAC national boy's and the CRA/USAC group plus the best shoes in A.Z. and N.M.

Darland is perhaps the most underated driver in the country.  Very very good.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

"USAC vs. Posse"??? Hardly any Pa. guys were there. After my first visit to Haubstadt, I'm convinced Indiana is THE PLACE to see wingless. Or California

I dig wingless cars, especially on  bullrings. I've seen the light!

Agreed, outside of IN and perhaps CA, they can't even draw a full field.

AZ and N.M is traditional Sprint Car country as well and all you have to do is look at the past CRA/SCRA champions and race winners along with our Triple Crown recipients (2) to see that. New Mexico's NMMRA is one of the oldest non wing sanctioning body's in the country and nine of the eleven SCRA champions were either from A.Z. or N.M. The Hall of fame, the Western and the Copper on Dirt are all non winged AZ shows with good to great car counts..You can add  our Winter Challenge and our Southwest USAC series to the mix as well.

you have identified USACs problem.  The main attraction for a LOT of the USAC/non wing cars is the hope that they make the big time. Im not saying that its bad, but a lot of the cars thatyou see running in indiana are driven by kids, ie <20 years old, that are supported by dads money and dad thinks his kid is the next jeff gordon, tony stewart. When reality hits they fold.

Read the article on  Kevin Thomas Jr in this months Sprint Car & Midget mag and then get back to me with what a "LOT" is. The era of family's looking for a NASCAR ride for there kid through USAC is all but over, but hey, it still happens. Our regional traditional Sprint Car series that just happens to have USAC attached to it now that Emmitt kicked us to the curb has a very high % of owner/drivers and you'll see a lot of that in Cali as we'll. For a lot of our guy's over on this side like JJ yeley and Jerry Coons jr it was throw the family in the car, head east and give it a go; and if you look at the top !0 in points you had better have more than just money going for you if you're going to make it work.

NEW AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT POINTS: 1-Clauson-1,489, 2-Darland-1,489; 3-Bacon-1,430; 4-Stockon-1,323; 5-Thomas-1,302; 6-Hines-1,192; 7-Ballou-1,154; 8-Hunter Schuerenberg-1,000; 9-Chris Windom-980; 10-Shane Cottle-919.

I couldn't tell you about any western tracks but walk thru the pits at A local Indiana track and I'd bet some nites 50% of the drivers are under 20.  And if you think the top USAC cars are even remotely lower budget I have some ocean front lots in AZ to sell. Don't get me wrong there some very talented guys running USAC/non wing but I'd guess if you asked them would they prefer to win the Knoxville nats, Kings Royal or a big non wing race I'm thinking the first 2 choices get the most votes.

Already have my tickets, and it didn't cost me anything.

We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

I'm a huge fan of sprint car racing in general whether it be traditional, winged "modified", 360, or 410. The traditional races i have been to have been great although the car counts usually are down but hey, its about quality not quantity. With that said, if USAC could figure out a way to get more quality on top of what they have then things might get better.

Just ate an awesome rack of ribs at Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous... and who of all people did I run into?  Mr. Darland!

What a nice guy!

He was leaving the restroom when I was leaving the restaurant; I apologized for interrupting him but wished him luck tonight.  Told him this was the 2nd time I traveled a long way from Dallas to see him & he was really cool about that.  I told him if they paid $10 for every car he passed on the track last night that he'd be a millionaire.  He just laughed & said it was a bad night.  He thanked me for coming to the races.

He came from the back after a service area stop in his heat & after a tussle in the feature.  Like I said (and what others have said way before me)... he's a show in himself.  Clauson, Thomas & a few others are really fun to watch but Dave has that thing cranked so far sideways you wonder if a spin out is on the way every lap.

Random thoughts from last night:

  • I'm sure Ballou has his fans but he seems like a hothead that makes plenty of mistakes (wrecks, collisions with others from what I read) but sure has a short memory when someone wrongs him in his opinion.  I like underdogs but more of the lovable underdogs.  Maybe the stress of competing at a high level with nothing is the issue there.  I doubt he has spare everythings in the trailer unlike some that drive like it.
  • What happened to golden boy Chris Windom?  Nice article in what was a career year last year in SC&M magazine.  Ride hopping.  Didn't make the trip (not that many did...).
  • It was amazing how some good 360s could run with & frustrate the HELL out of good 410s.  Ask Tracy Hines or Darland or any USAC regular that finished behind 360s.  Tight, little 1/4 mile track with the right surface & a top shelf 360 team is a force to be reckoned with.  $5k to win would be a very nice payday with a 360.  Top 5 still would pay well & would be entirely possible.  Crawley did it last night... won there before in the same scenario.

Talked to Ballou at length lastnight at hammerhill & he said all he is doing iN the 12car was testing stuff for maxim

the 410's on that track are no good unless they can ride up top & stay wound up. 360's get a better pull off the bottom. If Brady wouldve pulled to the top sooner he may have won lastnight
