SILVER DOLLAR HOSTS USAC WESTERN CLASSIC SPRINT FINALE
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – SEPTEMBER 4, 2013… Tomorrow, September 5th, the stars of the USAC Western Classic Racing Series will battle at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway during the “60th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions.” The “Cavalcade of Gold Cup Memories” will also feature the Honda USAC Western and BCRA Midgets, Dwarf Cars, and Vintage Cars. The Spectator Gates will open at 5:00pm with time trials scheduled to begin at 6:30pm.

In the three year history of the USAC Western Classic Racing Series, Silver Dollar Speedway has hosted five events with the traditional sprint cars. Indiana’s Bill Rose won the inaugural race on May 11, 2011 and other Chico winners are Kyle Larson (twice), Kody Swanson, and Kyle Hirst. A talented roster of drivers are expected at Silver Dollar Speedway as they look to add a “Gold Cup” victory to their win list.

Heading to Thursday series finale, Ryan Bernal of Hollister has a 53 point advantage over the competition. After scoring fourth on Saturday and scratching the final night at Calistoga’s “Louie Vermeil Classic,” Bernal has parted ways with the Josh Ford Motorsports team. At press time, Ryan may be looking for another ride to earn his first USAC Championship as Bud Kaeding will pilot the #73 JFM entry at Chico.

Stockton’s D.J. Johnson is second in the USAC Western Classic point chase. Racing the family owned #33 Unique Breeds / Proplant Farm Services Eagle, Johnson scored a seventeenth and twentieth place finish at Calistoga. The leading rookie of the year candidate has yet to win a main event, but has a shot to win the title at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Defending Western Classic Champion, Tony Hunt of Lincoln is third in the point standings. Driving Mike Phulps’ #56 Metal Works / Red Line Oil Maxim, Hunt missed the Saturday feature and ran eighteenth in the Sunday finale of the “Louie Vermeil Classic.” The 11-time USAC Champion will be looking to add a victory at Silver Dollar Speedway to his resume.

Fair Oaks’ Shauna Hogg is fourth in the championship points. Piloting the family owned #5 Borello Racing Engines / Jerry Crowell Racing Shocks Eagle, Hogg scored twentieth on Saturday and missed the Sunday feature at Calistoga. Shauna will have her sights on winning the Thursday night “Cavalcade of Gold Cup Memories.”

Landon Hurst of Riverdale is fifth in the USAC Western Classic point chase. The driver of the family owned #179 Kings River Commodities / Duinkerken Farms Maxim did not race at Calistoga’s “Louie Vermeil Classic.” Also a regular competitor with the USAC West Coast Sprints, the rookie contender has yet to win a feature and may miss the races at Chico.

Gordon Rodgers, Marty Hawkins, Bud Kaeding, “The Human Highlight Reel” Geoff Ensign, and Richard Vander Weerd round out the top-10 in points. Other drivers expected to compete are Matt Streeter, James Sweeney, Scott Hall, Jim Richardson, Klint Simpson, Andy Forsberg, Tom Baker, and more.

Competitors should note that Silver Dollar Speedway is located on a California State Fairgrounds and has a mandatory 95db at 100ft muffler rule. Knoxville type mufflers are not allowed and series rules apply. All cars must meet series tech standards and race track muffler rules to compete.

Silver Dollar Speedway is located on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds at 2357 Fair Street in Chico. Reserved tickets are $30 and for more information, visit www.silverdollarspeedway.com or call (530) 350-7275.

30 bucks? Nice to see Chico hasn't stopped charging absurd ticket prices. How much does the Gold Cup pay this year? No worries, still the same 50 dollar ticket price as it was when it paid 50k to win.
