FINAL JOHNNY KEY QUALIFIER ON TAP FOR FRIDAY

WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (August 15, 2013) - With the highly anticipated 2013 Johnny Key Classic less than 10 days away, the Ocean Speedway Watsonville will stage the prelude with the fourth qualifying race on Friday night.  The winner of Friday's Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo feature will add their name to an all-star qualified driver list of Kyle Hirst, 1996 Johnny Key winner Bud Kaeding, and 2012 Rebel Cup champion DJ Netto.

The 53rd Johnny Key Classic is on tap for Saturday August 24th with a 50 lap feature for $10,000 to win.  In the 2012 edition, a nearly sold-out crowd witnessed Tommy Tarlton lead all 50 laps in one of the fastest Key races on record.  Tarlton and his teammate and nephew Carson Macedo will be in action on Friday to try to lock themselves in.

In addition to the four qualifier winners, the two highest drivers in the points will also earn a guaranteed starting position.  The current top-two in the standings are Brad Furr of Stockton and Gilroy's Kurt Nelson.  Should one of them win on Friday, Salinas' Jeremy Chisum would be able to take advantage from third in the points.

Nelson has kept the points chase close throughout the year, overcoming a 20 point deficit from a 17th place finish on opening night to trail Furr by 40 points with five rounds remaining on the busy schedule.

Chisum leads San Jose's Ryan Rusconi, part-time entrant Bud Kaeding, his brother Jason Chisum, top rookie Nick Foster, Jr. of San Jose, and Fresno's Koen Shaw in a tightly wound pack for the third position overall.  The spread between these six drivers is a scant 52 markers.

Nick Rescino, Jr. failed to compete in the last event and fell to ninth in the points with Nicholas Ringo holding down the tenth spot.  Pleasanton rookie Nathan Washam is 11th while 2012 Ocean Sprints champion Shane Golobic has parlayed a part-time effort to 12th in the points.

Johnny Key Classic laps are on sale through [email protected]  Each lap will be sold for $50 and be distributed to the top three finishers of that lap.

Friday's races for the Ocean Sprints also includes Four Bangers, American Stocks, IMCA Sport Modifieds, and Wingless Sprints.  Adult tickets are just $17 with seniors 65+ $16 and kids ages 6-12 are $15.  The family pass for two adults and two children is value priced at just $55.  Qualifying will get underway at 6 p.m.
