FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THIRD JOHNNY KEY QUALIFIER TO FIRST TIME WINNER DJ NETTO

WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (July 27, 2013) - Hanford's DJ Netto, the 2012 Rebel Cup champion, topped an all-star field of Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo to take the non-stop Johnny Key Classic Qualifying race.  Netto's first career win locks him into the starting field for the 2013 Johnny Key Classic, where he will race against fellow qualifiers Kyle Hirst and Bud Kaeding towards the $10,000 victory.

Netto led the final 22 laps for the victory, taking a 2.275 second win over Steven Tiner in the six minute, 23 second 30 lap feature.

"We were a little loose at the beginning.  Got Steven in lapped traffic right there.  Good thing I work out during the week because those last five laps got a little tough.  Just a great night and happy we're locked into the Johnny Key Classic.  First win in a Sprint Car and it feels amazing!"

Netto lined up alongside Tiner at the start of the feature with Tiner leading the opening lap.  Tiner led the field into lapped traffic by lap five, which allowed Netto to close the gap.  On lap eight, Netto dove inside Tiner down the frontstretch to lead lap nine by a nose.

Brent Kaeding started the feature fourth and worked his way past Chowchilla's Eric Humphries but remained mired in lapped traffic throughout the event and was unable to close down on Tiner.

Watsonville's Justin Sanders made his return to Ocean Speedway and charged from tenth up into the fourth position by lap 13 but never got the caution flag he needed, either.  The hardest charging drivers on the night were Ray Scheidt's Electric Fast Timer Bud Kaeding, who accepted the Nobel Construction Back Row challenge after promoter John Prentice sweetened the pot to a total of $4200.

Kaeding kept himself near the tail end of the lead lap throughout the contest, eventually navigating the 21 car field up into seventh at the finish.

Points leader Brad Furr of Stockton had a wild crash in his heat race that threw him into the front stretch fence and forced him to a backup car.  Furr started in the back with Kaeding and finished 11th, one lap down on the leaders.  Second in points Kurt Nelson of Gilroy took advantage with a sixth place effort along with a second place in his heat race.

Tiner closed down on Netto several times in the final ten laps before Netto was able to dash away to take the comfortable victory.  Tiner, Brent Kaeding, Sanders, and Eric Humphries rounded out the top-five at the stripe in the one of the fastest 30 lap features in Ocean Speedway history.

"I got in the lead and I've struggled here to win so I was going to play it conservative in traffic tonight," Tiner said.  "DJ ran an absolutely perfect race in traffic.  I was waiting for him to mess up.  I have no shame running second to him tonight.  Hats off to those guys."

The DDNi Hard Charger was Bud Kaeding for gaining 14 positions in the event.

Heat race wins went to Netto, Sanders, and Salinas' Jason Chisum.

Open wheel racing returns to Ocean Speedway on Friday August 9th for the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, before the fourth Johnny Key qualifier on August 16th.  The 2013 Johnny Key Classic is scheduled for Saturday night August 24th.
