Garbage? That's a great article that everyone should read. When I talk about further exploration into the causes of injuries and deaths, this is the sort of thing I'm talking about. The recent discussion regarding torsion bars has been great. My interest lies in making crashes survivable. We're not ever going to eliminate crashes. This article is a step in the right direction. - Ben Truetken

The discussion of torsion bars is one thing. This article was by a sports car guy and by a web site that picked up on it and exploited it. That's my problem with it.

Regardless of if you liked Dr. Norman's article or not he did do a good job at defining the causes racing related deaths. Per his article 4 of the 6 are related to the driver impacting something causing deceleration. Now that we all know this lets F-ing fix the problem. There are some very simple improvements we can make to the cars to reduce the G forces the driver feels in an accident. For example better nerf bars, bumpers and rollover hoops. Who do we need to talk to in order to get the racing organizations to make some real safety improvements. I am sure there is someone at organizations like USAC, WOO, ASCS or ASCoC. The real trick is convincing all of them to make the same safety improvements so the component manufactures can make one set of parts for all organizations. That said does any here know who to talk to at any of these organizations? Or if you are from any of these organizations please contact me via e-mail at [email protected]. Please lets engineer a safer sprint car!!!!!

For starters, sanctioning bodies need to mandate HANS and full-containment seats with wrap-around support in the head area. Equipment that could have saved at least a handful of lives recently is readily available. Just sayin'

I would agree that a head and neck system should be mandatory. I am not sure that it should be a HANS devise, which is supposed to be awesome for frontal impact and not so much for torsional twist. At least that is what the rep at Simpson told me. That is why we ended up with an R3, (that we did not buy from Simpson) which is supposed to be better suited for the torsional twists that a Sprinter goes through when rolling over. That having been said, I agree that we need to make some equipment mandatory.
