Donny Schatz Does It Again at Knoxville!

KNOXVILLE RACEWAY, Knoxville, IA, June 15, 2013 – Donny Schatz served notice that he's still in charge at the Knoxville Raceway. The Fargo, North Dakota native secured his 17^th career feature win in the World of Outlaws last appearance before August's 53^rd Annual FVP Knoxville Nationals in August. Clint Garner also scored his 17^th career win in the 360 class on Saturday night at the Knoxville Raceway.

Schatz led lap one, trading the spot with Brian Brown. Brown took command on lap two ahead of Schatz and quick-timer, Bronson Maeschen. By lap nine, Brown had opened up a two second lead on the field, when Mark Dobmeier blew his right rear tire and flipped down the backstretch. He was uninjured.

The double-file restart saw Brown choose the high side ahead of Schatz, Maeschen and Davey Heskin. The fight for second through fourth had been hectic in lapped traffic. Before another lap could be completed, Kerry Madsen blew his right rear on the frontstretch while running in the top ten, necessitating a single-file restart. In the melee, Lynton Jeffrey was collected by Jason Solwold and was forced to retire.

Brown continued to lead, while Ian Madsen worked by Paul McMahan into the top five. It was smooth sailing for Brown until Kraig Kinser slowed dramatically in front of him in turn one. Brown's front nerf bar caught the tail of Kinser's car. He veered towards the wall and was able to save it, but Schatz roared by into the lead.

Ian Madsen had things working, as he worked his way into fourth, and by Maeschen for third on lap 16. Maeschen brought his mount back into third and he, Ian Madsen and Heskin battled in the top five. Unfortunately for Heskin, he would blow a left rear tire with nineteen laps in the books. He would restart at the tail.

The caution erased a 2.5 second lead for Schatz over Brown, but he pulled away for the win. Brown settled for second, while McMahan got by Maeschen, who was running out of fuel for third. Ian Madsen and Daryn Pittman were fourth and fifth. Danny Lasoski (from 18^th), David Gravel, hard-charger Tim Kaeding, Craig Dollansky and Sammy Swindell rounded out the top ten.

"This is a tribute to a great race team," said Schatz in Victory Lane. "These guys are awesome and are great to be around. I'm just a lucky guy. I wasn't really racing (Brown), I was racing myself. As hard as those guys were running up there, it got a little bit choppy up there in one and two. There was a tough spot coming off of four. When you're playing a game you can't win, you know you better be careful. I tried to avoid the holes in the middle of the corner. Our car was pretty decent through the middle there for a while. I'm glad to get a win. It never gets old, I can tell you that."

"I think Ray Charles could see who our target is right now," said Brown of Schatz. "It was one of those deals where we got caught up in a lapped car and got balled up. We had a good car all night long. Donny's just outdriving me, and we'll go back to work."

"It was a good run," said McMahan. "I had my hands full with my racecar. We were really tight and I about drove in the pits several times. I'd like to thank all the fans for coming out."

McMahan, Steve Kinser, Brown and Jason Sides were heat race winners. Brown won the Dash and Danny Lasoski took the B. Forty-three cars were on hand.

Ryan Roberts led Clint Garner and Jon Agan early in the 18-lap 360 feature. The lead pair separated themselves from the pack, while Jamie Ball took over in third. With ten laps to go, the lead trio raced ahead of Agan, Nate Van Haaften, Matt Moro and Russ Hall.

With thirteen laps in the books, Roberts bobbled on the cushion and Garner reeled him in to take the lead sliding through turn three. Roberts made a late bid to return the favor on a Garner bobble with two laps to go, but slowed behind the lapped car of Tom Lenz. Ball was third, ahead of Van Haaften and Agan. Russ Hall, Matt Moro, Joe Beaver, Ricky Montgomery and Matt Juhl rounded out the top ten.

Beaver posted quick-time, while Agan and Van Haaften won the heat races.

"The cushion was there, it was just way up along the fence," said Garner in Victory Lane. "Turn four was scarier than heck, but if you did it right, there was all kinds of bite there. It was a lot of fun, and that's the kind of racetrack I love. It was home track advantage. If (Roberts) had been here more this year, he may have won that race."

Saturday, June 22, all three sprint car divisions will be back in action for Farm Bureau Mid-Season Championships Night! It's also Knoxville Hall of Fame Night. Bronson didnt run out of fuel, broke a rocker arm.

Great race on what many grumbled early on in section "H" to be a expected no passing track. Another tribute to the track prep crew to make a sloppy wet, heavy track very entertaining and raceable with many passes everywhere (Kaeding from 21st to 8th) in the WoO feature. Got my $35.00 worth all weather things considered.

Yeah, too bad the WoO has not built passing points into their program. Since "most" races produce a winner from the front row it would sure be nice if passing points were part of their program.

Speaking of TK Roth Motorsports has made a change in their crew chief on the 83jr car out here. Sonny Kratzer is no longer with them. Rob Hart has joined ROTH and will be the crew chief for TK. Read it on the post by dirtracingreport in case you missed it.

What has happened to the car count in the 360 C.I. sprint class. Last week 16 cars, last night only 14. For many years it was around 30 or more.

What's with these great Hoosier tires blowing up all over the place according to the article, maybe it wasn't as bad as the article made it out. Also, tough luck for Solwold getting in a wreck, couldnt' tell by article who was at fault but team was not looking for a wrecked car for sure after making driver change. Lucas not unhappy, but then again the decent kid he is, not happy either.

Never forget what Kerry Madsen said in an interview in Sprint Car or Flat Out about the difference between racing in Australia/NZ and the U.S WoO series: in Australia or NZ, after the feature, drivers have a beer together and talk to each other just like before the races but in the WoO, after the feature, its like the drivers don't even know each other. Liked that line. I suppose had to do with who pushed on who, etc.

Knoxville had 14 360's last night, Hartford, SD had 24 for HALF the pay..... anybody want to explain why?

2 things from my perspective....1) Donny Schatz simply CANNOT be beaten at Knoxville. He OWNS Knoxville raceway! They should rename is "Schatz Raceway"! Im not a huge Schatz fan but he doesnt seem to be the asshole he was say a couple years ago! He actually smiles during interviews like he is enjoying himself because lets face it...Steve Kinser was the King of the Outlaws but he is the new King!

2) Although Im not a basher I will say that I agree with the fact that Cody Darrah has no business in a KKR racecar nevermind running with the Outlaws. I guarantee you you stick somebody like Shane Stewart in the beast and he wouldve already have a couple wins this year! Kid is WAY over his head! 1 Top 10 every 20 races just doesnt cut it, especially for someone like Kasey Kahne! Just dont understand why he is still in that ride!

If it were my car I'd have someone different in it too (I'll take Stevie Smith based on what Pittman's done in the car), but he does have 13 top 10s, not quite 1 every 20 races. He also has more top 5s and more top 10s than anyone named Kinser. Suggesting Sheldon Haudenschild would be the answer is a bit silly when you compare Darrah's body of work before he got to the Outlaws with Sheldon's now. The #93 is fun to watch and fast, but I'd argue the #89 a few years ago was faster and won bigger races more often. This WoO deal is tough, everyone on here says Shane Stewart, but forget Shane Stewart won 1 race in the #83 car a few years ago the entire season. It's not automatic.
