Charge from 16th to 6th on Friday highlights weekend for Brett Miller

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA - July 17, 2007... Running yet again with the smaller 360 power plant under the hood, Chico’s Brett Miller and Care Free Pools Racing were once again under powered racing against some of the best 410 sprint car drivers on the West Coast. There were hopes of having the 410 back from the engine builder in time for this past weekend’s double header in Chico, but that didn’t pan out and the team hit the Silver Dollar Speedway clay with the 360 both night’s, also using the black car for the first time in over a month.

The biggest problem with running the 360 against the 410's at Silver Dollar is the fact that no matter how good of a lap you cut in qualifying, you’re usually right around 15th-20th. The banking at Silver Dollar makes the difference much bigger than at other tracks, but Brett and the team came into the weekend with positive thoughts and were set out to have a good time. On Friday night the "Catfish" qualified 18th quick and finished third in his heat race to transfer the Care Free Pools, Platinum Powder Coating, JP’s Paint & Body, Al’s Concrete No. 1x into the main event.

The 25 lap contest saw Brett line up way back in the 16th position. The 17 year-old ran a smart race and using a couple good breaks with cautions, he was able to carve his way through the field to bring home a nice sixth place finish in the Wolfe Electric, Jandy Pools, A1A Performance Muffler, The Country Craftsman 1x. The team joked after the race that maybe it was the black car that brought the good luck after weeks of tough luck using the red car.

On Saturday night the Golden State Challenge Series invaded Silver Dollar Speedway and Brett began the event by qualifying 18th fastest again. The Care Free Pools crew gave him a great car and Brett cut a perfect lap to get down to a 12.740, but it was just about all he could do. "The Catfish" had to go through the B-main on this night and he brought home a third place finish in it to place the River City Pools, Smartwebsales.com, Kaeding Performance Maxim into the feature. Starting 18th in the 30 lap GSC main event, Brett was able to get up to 12th by the finish to cap off the weekend.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad weekend for Brett and the team as the car rolled into the trailer both night’s and the finishes weren’t too bad at all for using a 360. On the bright side, however, the main 410 engine is back and the backup 410 is expected to be here by the end of the week.

With the 410 back under the hood, Brett and Care Free Pools Racing will head for Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway on Friday night for the third to last race of the Golden State Challenge Series season. On Saturday there was a scheduled GSC race for Hanford, but that was cancelled a couple weeks back. Brett’s 18th birthday is on Saturday so he’ll now be able to celebrate it home and it will give the crew a weekend off to relax and get ready for the following weekend, which feature’s the big two day GSC finale at Silver Dollar Speedway.
