I'm going to try to make Indiana Speed Week this July. I can't decide if I want to spend 2 days during the break looking for something to do. I'm driving from Houston Tx. What do you folks consider the better tracks? (I haven't been to any of them). Not sure if the first segment would be better, or the last. Or, just go to all of them??

Go to all, on off days go to Indy and to the special tour. I've done segments of the week, but always felt I was missing something, and I was. You never know what track will have the best racing, the high banks at Lawrencburg, the big 1/2 at Terre Haute, the smaller tracks like gas city or Kokomo. But if all you can do is one week, its a hell of lot better than not going at all. If you can swing, it well worth the effort to attend all. Make sure you don't miss Kokomo or Haubstadt, not sure of the schedule though

If you have to miss one race make it gas city
If you have to miss two the add lawrenceburg
Try not to miss any other five and DEFINITELY do not miss KOKOMO

I've read before that Indiana Midget Week is sometimes better to attend because you get to see USAC and Indiana's top guys in both midgets and sprint cars. My dad and a group of our racing friends went out to a weekend of Sprint Week last year and this year they're going to Midget Week.

All good info. Thanks folks. I definitely want to see Terre Haute and Kokomo. I usually get my midget fix at the Chili Bowl, although I had to miss this year. That's a good idea about doing the Indy tour. I'm thinking I'll just do the whole week.

I'm traveling up from Knoxville and attending all of them. The two days off I plan on touring the Speedway and museum in Indy and laundry and R & R. Really looking forward to it!!
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss

I drive up from Houston, too. In fact, I am up here now when there is even more racing than Sprint Week. I have been doing this for some time now. As to your days off, I, too recommend the IMS tour, AND the museum. I go every year because they rotate cars in and out and have other displays. Another cool thing to do is Robert Ballou's bowling night. Last year it became a benefit, and it is a great way to have fans interact with the drivers. There have been two different venues, but I believe that it will again be in Brownsburg, just a few minutes to the west of Indianapolis. No one is really serious about the bowling, and it is a great time.

You may want to think about the logistics. When I first started doing Sprint Week, I would find hotels close to the tracks and check in and out every day. It got to be a pretty big hassle. If there is a rain out, then you are stuck in some places (like Gas City) where there is NOTHING to do. Since I am taking pictures and need space, I get a studio suite (I prefer the Residence Inn, but there are also others) and centrally locate myself in Indianapolis. It allows me to have space to work AND to save on eating since I stock up the kitchen with a quick visit to the grocery store when I arrive in town. If you decide to follow the events, better make reservations at the hotels. They can fill up with folks wearing racing T-shirts for some odd reason. . .

And I, too would recommend that you make all of the events. Any given night at any track can be good or bad. Hell, last night at Bloomington had to be the worst track that I have ever seen there in the 12 years that I have been watching racing there, but it was easily one of the best features that I have ever seen there, let alone shoot. The crazy Lawrenceburg high banks are not to be missed. Gas City? Yeah, it can be mercurial, but last year Levi Jones and Bryan Clauson put on a battle that I will never forget. The track prep at Haubstadt has to be seen to be believed, and Kokomo? Words cannot describe. The speeds at Terre Haute will have you holding your breath. . .

More good ideas. Thanks. Staying in Indy for the week will work. Maybe stay close to Haubstadt to avoid doubling back on the last night. That's gonna be a long haul from Liberty Tx to Indy!

Do them all!! There is a reason I moved to Indiana, and it wasnt to look at Corn and Soybeans.

Save some time to come back to Indiana in August for the Kokomo Smackdown. Now the best 3 nights of sprint car racing in the country. After you see sprintcars race at Kokomo you'll know why that is. 3 and 4 wide racing is the norm there, and occasionally they get 5 wide too.

That is exactly what I do. I can make it from Haubstadt to Manvel in about 14 hours. There are a few hotels just a couple miles from the track at the intersection of US 41 and the Interstate. In fact, I will be doing just that this coming Sunday.

I have a question for you. Do I know you? You know I shoot over at RPR these days when I am home.

What is wrong with Gas City and Lawrenceburg? They're both great tracks! Gas City is a great little bullring, and Lawrenceburg is one of the nicest facilities anywhere. The USAC race at Lawrenceburg earlier this spring was one of the best races I've ever seen! Catch the whole series if you can - usually hotter than h_ll, but some of the best racing you'll ever see.
