How sad. Any idea why he decided to end it? He was always a great guy. His granddaughters were killed In a car crash 10 or so years ago. That must have been very difficult. RIP and he'll never be forgotten.

Found this over at ESPN.. Truly sad.
Ex-driver Dick Trickle dead at 71CONCORD, N.C. -- Retired stock-car driver Dick Trickle, known for his colorful name and short-track prowess, died on Thursday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 71.
According to the Lincoln County, N.C., sheriff's department, the incident occurred at 12:02 p.m. ET at Forest Lawn Cemetery off Highway 150 in Boger City.
The Lincoln County Communications Center received a call, apparently from Trickle, that "there would be a dead body and it would be his." Center workers tried to place a return call to the number but did not get an answer.
Emergency units found Trickle's body lying near his pickup truck when they arrived.
Lt. Tim Johnson, who heads the Lincoln County detective department, said that at the family's request, no additional information would be released at this time.
Johnson said there would be an investigation, which is standard in cases such as these.
"He called in," Johnson said. "It's not the first time we've had these. It's always a sad situation ... even sadder for the family."
Trickle, a native of Wisconsin, has been a resident of Lincoln County since the early 1990s. His only victory in NASCAR's premier series was a non-points victory in the 1990 Winston Open, the preliminary to the All-Star race.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Dick Trickle on his passing today," NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said in a statement. "Dick was a legend in the short-track racing community, particularly in his home state of Wisconsin, and he was a true fan favorite. Personalities like Dick Trickle helped shape our sport. He will be missed."
Trickle has been billed as the winningest short-track driver in the history of stock-car racing, recording about 1,000 victories in feature races, including 67 in 1972.
He was the rookie of the year in NASCAR's premier series in 1989 with six top-five finishes and nine top 10s.
Much of Trickle's short-track success came in Wisconsin, where he was nicknamed the "White Knight' because of his SuperAmerica paint scheme.
Reigning Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski said Trickle was "the guy' when it came to Midwest short-track racing.
"He meant a lot to the local short-track racers,' Keselowski said after unveiling his Miller Lite fan mosaic paint scheme for Saturday's All-Star race. "Kind of more the Midwest style of racing, which was track by track when NASCAR was more of a regional Southern sport before it had developed to the national platform it is now. He was the superstar of that style.
"It is very sad to see him go, and obviously difficult with the way it went.'

Cole Trickle was a fictional character in the movie "Days of Thunder". However, a number of years back; his nephew, Chris Trickle, a promising driver on the West Coast was discovered shot on a road in Las Vegas. Chris later succumbed to his wounds. To my knowledge the Chris Trickle murder has never been solved.

Took some shots of him in the Garage area at Daytona back in the 90's, even in cowboy boots he was definitely vertically challenged or like we used to be able to say, dude was sure short. Not many ever taller in the seat in the mid-west tho', well liked and loved by many, won't see his type too often goin' down the road.....

Dick Trickle lost his grandaughter in a highway accident in NC, and his nephew to a drive by shooting in Las Vegas. The place he choose to end his own life was the cemetary that his granddaughter rests.
According to his brother, Dick was suffering from severe pain which could not be diagnosed.

Was fortunate to watch Dick Trickle race here in the Midwest in the 80's right before he left for NASCAR. The old ASA was loaded with talent. Trickle, Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki, Joe Shear, The Sauters, Miller, Reffner and more. GREAT racing at Slinger, Kaukauna, Wisconsin Dells, Rockford, Cedar Rapids, Lake Geneva and countless other short tracks here in the Midwest. Back then even NASCAR guys like Rusty Wallace had trouble handling the local talent.
Dick will always be "the man"!

I actually posted a picture here of his purple and white mustang a couple of years ago,as we were discussing the best looking race cars we had ever seen on this forum. Watched Dick many times as a kid race at I-70 speedway, when he came to town he usually won.-RIP.

He never got a break in NASCAR . He'd sub for injured drivers and make the car a potential winner. Came close several times. His "buddy' Mark Martin took a couple possibilities away. Bristol 92, Rockingjam 95 . Daytona 97.

Dick Trickle was always one of my favorites when I was a kid. I've always been a fan of the old guys, even when I was just 12 years old. Always rooted for Trickle, Dave Marcis, Alan Kulwicki, guys like that.
Sad that one of the greatest race drivers ever had to go out in pain like this, so let's be honest... do we really need to question what the pain in his chest was? The guy SMOKED UNDER CAUTIONS IN HIS RACE CAR. The first thing I thought when I heard about this was, "Oh, he must have been suffering from lung cancer."

Trickle stopped at my dad's business in Missouri when I was a teen to buy some used leaf springs. He had one of those all in one truck/open haulers, and a beat up all to hell number 99 on the back. He installed those springs on the car right on the truck, then cruised on up the interstate to I-70 speedway. That night he whipped them boys up there like a red-headed stepchild.

Here's a pic that I still have from the early 80's that my uncle took of me and Dick after he won a race at WIR in Kaukauna. I remember they had a $1000 bounty on him for anyone that could beat him. Dominant is an understatement. I didn't get to keep the trophy, lol, but he definitely made me a fan for life that day. GREAT guy!
