Mark Dobmeier – Up and Down Weekend Ends with a Win!

Lunstra Motorsports and Mark Dobmeier PR

May 16, 2013 – The Midwest season opened up with a three-race weekend last week for Mark Dobmeier and his Lunstra Motorsports team. Two nights were spent with the World of Outlaws and the weekend ended with their first win of the year at Huset’s Speedway.

The weekend kicked off at the beautiful Elko Speedway in Elko, Minn. on a gorgeous evening at the 3/8 mile paved facility with dirt on top of the asphalt. The night didn’t start off the best for Dobmeier as he timed in a disappointing 25th out of the 34 cars signed in. He would come up one spot short of transferring through the heat and wound up in the Last Chance Showdown. Contact from Jason Johnson after running in the final transfer spot on the last lap of that race resulted in a DNF and a torn up race car.

“Jason decided to drive through the infield over the infield berm and decided to take both of us out the transfer spot,” Dobmeier said. “Basically one of those racing deals, but the rear end was torn up with a few other things, so we had a few things to change before Knoxville.”

The Senske & Son Transfer Eagle headed south down I-35 for another night of Outlaw action at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa. More problems in qualifying ensued after 51 cars signed in for the night’s action. The result was a disappointing 44th quick. The team found some frame damage resulting from the previous night after performing maintenance, but continued to run the car as they didn’t want to go to a backup car for the evening after making a few changes to it during the day. A strong charge through the Last Chance Showdown came up a few spots start as “Dynamite” surged from 21st to 8th with only the top four transferring.

However, the night was not over as the team was able to utilize a track provisional with the Outlaws using two provisionals as well. That meant they would be lining up shotgun on the field in the 28th starting position. Even with the bent frame, Dobmeier was able to continue to move forward in the ‘A’ and ended up finishing in the 19th position at the end of the night after sliding to avoid a wreck down the frontstretch.

“It was just one of those nights down in Knoxville where we struggled from the get-go,” he said. “We were able to pass some cars there towards the end of the night, but still not the type of night that we wanted to have.”

It was then back to the Lunstra shop to switch to another Eagle Chassis on Sunday for the Mother’s Day Opener at the Huset’s Speedway outside of Brandon, SD. 15 cars were signed in for the night including popular Nationwide driver Kyle Larson. A thrilling few laps in the heat saw the Sioux Falls Ford #13 trading sliders with the young driver, resulting in Dobmeier picking up the heat race win on a slick surface. Since Dobs had turned the third quickest lap of the night, the inversion of four put him on the outside of the front row for the feature.

With rubber-down conditions imminent after watching the 360 feature, the fight for the lead into the first corner was very important. Dobmeier would beat pole sitter Lucas Wolfe into turn one and went on to lead all 25 laps to pick up the team’s first win of the year aboard the Big Trucks by Jimco entry.

“We had an awesome pill draw for the feature and were able to get to turn one with the lead and went on to win from there,” a pumped Dobmeier said after the win. “We really needed to get a win, even if it was on a rubber-down track. I feel bad for the fans having to see a race like that with Larson here, but this team will take it.”

Another three race weekend is planned with the opener scheduled on Friday in Dobmeier’s home town of Grand Forks, ND at the River Cities Speedway. The long trek to Knoxville ensues on Saturday, with the weekend wrapping back up at Huset’s on Sunday. The 2013 apparel can be found at the trailer after the races as well.
