Wednesdays with Wayne – Waiting Game!

(Bill W) April 17, 2013 – It's a frustrating time for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team as they await motors so they can go race. Things ended early in California with the World of Outlaws on Friday at the King's Speedway in Hanford, and the team is back at their headquarters in Knoxville, Iowa. Motors are on the way, however, it looks like they will be out of action at least for this weekend.

Wayne's motor broke in hot laps, causing the team to scramble and put their older one between the rails on Friday night. "We broke our motor in hot laps," he says. "We got one lap at the end with our little motor. I didn't have a chance to see the track or anything."

Wayne was able to move from ninth to fifth and qualify for the main event through the B. "We were able to pass a couple there and get in the feature," he says. "We were coming on pretty good in the feature. We passed (Jason) Meyers and we were up to 14th. I was passing guys on the outside and making it work."

The slick track worked to his advantage with the older motor, but it couldn't stop him from an unavoidable tangle. "On the last restart, they checked up in front of me, and Meyers and I got together," he says. "That knocked the nose wing down and I was back in 21st. At that point, it was stupid. I pulled it in and saved it for another day."

Wayne can look back on the western swing with the WoO with some confidence. With the new motor under the hood, they were regulars in the Dash. "When we got the new motor, we were in the Dash just about every night," he says. "When we had that motor, I felt we were as good as anyone. Once we lost that, we were struggling just to put it in the show with our old one."

The WoO has little mercy for anyone low on horsepower. "Looking at the trip, when we had the motor, we ran well," says Wayne. "When we had the eight year old motor, we definitely struggled! We thought we could get away with it on the smaller tracks out there, but you're not going to get away with that with the Outlaws. If you don't qualify, you might as well park it…and that's what we did a few times. You don't want to be out there just to make laps."

So now Wayne awaits motors to return from his engine builders. He will be picky about where he runs his 360. He is possibly eying the Jackson Spring Nationals next Friday. "Right now, it's just a frustrating situation," he says. "We're just waiting on motors. In the meantime, we'll just pick and choose the 360 races we go to…the ones that pay well."

Wayne's Fast Facts

Wayne's three wins in 2010 came in three different cars, at three different tracks, in three states, with three different sanctions. He won the Ronald Laney Memorial "King of the 360's" worth $14,500 at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida in February aboard the Glenn Styres #0. His next win came in April at the Heart 'O Texas Speedway near Waco, Texas with the ASCS-Lone Star series aboard Brian Parker's #9x. Finally, he won in his home state of Iowa at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington in May aboard Dale Oaks #41.

Partner of the Week – Maxim Chassis

By 2001, Maxim had grown substantially producing 304 chassis that year. In 2002, Maxim moved to its present 12,500 square foot location in Springfield, Illinois. Maxim continues to offer their customers unmatched service and support, and currently has 17 quality employees, and builds over 400 chassis on an annual basis.
