SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart of Rushville, Ind., flew into Selinsgrove Saturday evening from Martinsville (Virginia) Speedway, where the elite Cup series is competing this weekend, to race in Selinsgrove Speedway’s Empire Super Sprint (ESS) Mach 1 Chassis 358-360 sprint car challenge race and came away with a convincing victory in the 30-lap, $3,000-to-win feature.
In qualifying, Stewart set a new one-lap track record for 360 sprint cars at Selinsgrove in 17.168 seconds (111.053 average miles per hour) and also won his eight-lap heat race. Stewart qualified 26th on Friday for this Sunday’s STP Gas Boosters 500 NASCAR Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

Just curious.
Did Smoke have his own car or drive for another team?
The $3K will barely cover his fuel bill to get there and return to Martinsville!

opnwhir,
Stewart ran his own #14. He ran a 410 on Friday night at Williams Grove, then dropped (his crew) a 360 in and ran Selinsgrove last night. I doubt the $$$ is an issue. Smoke just likes to race!!

opnwhlr, I believe from the photo posted on TJ Slideways that Tony drove his own car. He raced the night before at Williams Grove (410 class) and I believe he drove his own car there (not sure he used the same car in both places and just changed engines). Recently Forbes Magazine published a listing of the yearly incomes of professional athletes and if I remember correctly Tony's was in the 18 million dollar range. His personal sprint car has numerous "Big Time" sponsors on it, most of those sponsors are also on the Stewart-Haas NASCAR cars and I don't know what all those financial arrangements are but I believe Tony's not too concerned with the cost of jet fuel. I'm just pleased that he loves Open Wheel Racing enough to do what he does to support the sport and still enjoys getting behind the streering wheel & and playing in the dirt.

I believe that tony requires a huge some of money to show up at these races, i used to think that that was great of him to go to these races for the fans, but later found out that there is a huge amount of show up money like [20,000 or more] kind of lost a little excitment factor for tony, sorry just my opionion of him..

Yeah, I have to agree BIGROB. If he loves racing so much, and money obviously isn't an issue, than why appearance money? That's lame...........
SUPPORT WILDLIFE, go to a sprint car race!

I'm sure there are times when Tony Stewart gets paid an appearance fee (when advertised in advance) to race his sprint car, but I do know that he races numerous events without being paid a dime more then what the purse pays!!!!

It's a slippery slope you walk down if you're worked up about Stewart getting appearance money. "Name" drivers have been getting it since there was racing. Have you not read about Jan Opperman getting appearance money? Calling it "tow money" when you're running for points or not... it's simply a part of the business that a lot of folks don't know about but nonetheless exists. You've cheered for a LOT of drivers that weren't showing up out of the goodness of their heart or for love of the game. Non-sanctioned races with big name drivers? Sure some are there for the purse but a lot have more reasons to be there. As for Stewart & $, he's not a charity. Why should the promoter use his fame & not pay for the additional seats sold? Try using his image to promote something without his permission. Have an attorney ready, btw. He's run A LOT of races where the $ couldn't possibly have made sense. I think it's a combination of "just wants to race" & he needs some $ to make it happen at your specific track. Flying alone knocks the reality factor money wise into a loss every time. The plane doesn't fly itself. Jet fuel, pilot, maintenance, etc. are more than he could make at double the winner's purse at most sprint car events. Why not just relax, enjoy a Sprint Cup champion racing a sprint car & quit worrying about things that are way out of your control?

Yep, we didn't even know for sure if Tony was going to show up or not at Canyon when NASCAR's was in town last year when the wings were in town, we just cross our fingers. Ha, and with our small seating capacity it would be plan old stupid to pay anyone $20,000 appearance money. He was there both nights.
This year it was a no brainer. We had a all non wing CRA/USAC show and I doubted he'd have liked to have be spanked by the likes of Bryan Clauson, Damion Gardner, Mike Spencer, Bud Kaeding etc. I know he won in Las Vegas years ago in non winged car, but watch the video on utube and make sure you have the sound on so you can hear all the booing.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

i seriously doubt there was any appearance money otherwise there would be advertisements stating he was coming.....he just showed up....he has previously stated he would be racing more than 50 sprint car events this season as his schedule allows.

So even if you are charging $20 for a 360 show you would need 1000 more fans just to pay Tony before you could pocket any more than the normal profit. Sounds like that would be an iffy pro position for a promoter.

I would venture to guess that Tony received a 4TH place payout on Friday and the winners share on Saturday...
Opinions may vary...

For what it's worth...
Tony Stewart competed with us, (ASCS Midwest Regional race) at Eagle Raceway last season. I was told that he was paid some sort of "show money" but nowhere near the $20,000 that is being tossed around here. My understanding is that if he agrees to let the track promote the fact that he is coming to race, then he does receive some compensation, and in my opinion, rightfully so. They advertised that he was coming to compete in his own #14 sprint car (1) week prior to the event. They totally PACKED the place along with the infield because they ran out of grandstand seating. Great for the promoter and everybody in attendance.
Talked with Tony a little before the redraw on the front straightaway and if he just decides to show up un-announced, there is no "fee", he just loves to race. Great for the fans when he does that.
Our race that night was a great battle between Tony and a local named Stu Snyer who gave Tony everything he could handle. Tony won the feature event and the "HUGE" winners check of $1500. It was a few months later and the check never cleared my account so after a phone call to see if there was a problem with the winners check, I was informed that he donates these types of winnings to different charities and sometimes that causes a delay in processing the checks.
Good or bad, I'm sure everybody has their own story on Tony Stewart and this is mine.
Everybody has the right to form their own opinion on people but mine is that he is a rare breed of racer that the racing industry needs more of. He's more than welcome at any of our events, announced or otherwise...CZ

I made the comment about "barely covering his fuel cost" because I know what it takes to fly jets around..even those that are not large ones.
Tony does catch alot of flack but I'm quite sure very FEW actually know all he does for various organizations.
I hope this continues for many, many years and thanks to Mr. Doty and z-man for their first-hand comments.
As I type this 150 laps to go at Martinsville and Smoke is 17th. A big surpirse is "Danicky" running 20th and on the lead lap!

Chuck is correct about Tony. He had previously stated that he would not be signing autographs afterwards, because he had to get back down to KC and be up EARLY to race the next day. Well, he stayed and signed until everyone had theirs (it was after midnight by the way). THEN he stayed a little longer and let me interview him.
Did he get some small incentive to let the track use him to draw more fans?? Yep! Was it $20k? No way. Was it worth every cent? As Chuck stated, the stands were PACKED, so I'd say the promoter would say an unmitigated YES!!
If he just shows up, no fee; if it's announced and used in advertising, a small fee. Worth every cent.
Tony seems to me to be a genuinely nice guy, and one helluva racer to boot!!!
I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.
