By his own hand... (or liver)
While I like reading Kevin's articles, it has become more and more apparent to me that he thinks that he can do whatever he wants and there shouldn't be any consequences. While I don't think that it makes any sense to restrict someone to stay within a certain state while on parole, it also doesn't make any sense to blatantly defy parole and then write about it on a blog post (that's like the people that record something and upload it to the internet and then cry about the fact that the media saw it and is making it a story).
I live in Knoxville and while I agree that some of the law enforcement can be a little heavy handed (including our County Attorney that seems more interested in jail time for everyone than using common sense), they let A LOT of stuff slide (especially during Nationals) that would normally get you arrested or a ticket the other 354 days of the year. In Knoxville, unless you are on the Fairgrounds, you are on a city street.
We're all adults (or most of us are), and we all know what we can and can't do, some just choose to ignore those facts and think that just because it's the Nationals that they get free reign to do whatever they want. Over 75% of the people ticketed or arrested the 10 days of Nationals are LOCALS, you have to really screw up to get arrested or a ticket if you're from out of town.

Not a laughing matter. Eckert is without a doubt a historian without equal and his sprint car stats column is loaded with new and old information not available from any other source. But this time he has stepped over the line. Reading his latest two efforts he would almost lead you to believe the state of Iowa is the culprit when in fact it is Kevin who self inflicted his punishment and not the sheriff, the jailer, the city police of Knoxville, the highway patrol of Iowa and not the fact that jails are built to house criminals so a lot of arrests must be made. By his own admission he had ingested alcohol and or drugs (and not for the first time) and that means he is a menace on the highway and driving a vehicle in an impaired condition he could have easily had an accident and killed some innocent people. For him to suggest the blame for his jail time is not of his fault because he didn't do any harm and as a auto racing fan who likes to drink beer is a very, very childish if not stupid remark. I would hope that this is a wakeup for Kevin, I hope that he obeys the law and continues to inform all of us with his knowledge and remains a valued source. Until then his word is forever tainted with the stigma of his behavior.

I agree with your comments dakob. When you are 50 y/o it is way past time to get off the weed and take responsibility for your actions. A good friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver, so it is time for Kevin to grow up.

Unfortunately some folks believe in no higher authority/power than themselves. If "The Sleaze" ever grows up I'll be more surprised than I'd be if I woke up in the morning with my head sewn to the floor.

Why would Eckert want to grow up? So he can be a miserable son of a bitch like the rest of the square stiffs? He has made a name for himself by being who he is and not pretending to be a kiss ass sanitized reporter. If he doesn't like you he tells you. He doesn't like your politics he tells you. He has never pretended to be anything but open about his interests/habits in life whether you agree with them or not. He is as straight a shooter as anybody and I love reading his work. By the way he skipped on probation not parole there is quite a bit of a difference. I would do the exact same thing if I caught trouble in Iowa. Screw those soul crushing bastards and their backward laws. Eckert gets 30 days in jail and 2 years probation for a completely victimless violation of arguably frivolous laws but a many time Knoxville winner can assault an old man after the races and nothing happens to him. That seems just and fair? Not in my world. At least California and Arizona won't extradite for such a trivial offense.
Roll on sleaze, roll on!
Cheers!

He's no more sleaze than the rest of us...a sinner in need of a Savior. Trying to make sprint car racing his God instead of Jesus is his demise. It breaks my heart when I hear people saying that this crazy evil world is all there is.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

While it is not my choice of lifestyle...it sure would be a shame to lose his knowledge base and stats to the long arm of the law.
I guess this means Eckert is officially an Outlaw...and NOT Posse?

Don't know the guy, don't assume to be his judge, but he should stop driving while impaired.
Lots of accidents have occurred when people who think they're fine get behind a wheel and find out they're not.

Was he driving or walking? I thought he was arrested for walking while drunk.

Great column for those of us who do not insist on moral purity from Sprint Car writers. If that were the case this would be NASCAR.

Kevin would have us all believe that he did nothing wrong. He has twisted this deal around to try to make it look like he has been screwed over. Here is a quote from his lawyer found on the internet.
"
So Kevin got free representation due to his racing ties and chose to crap on that guy as well. Heck Kevin's family and friends are even tired of his childish antics. One of them stated
"
Kevin is a great writer that has somehow put himself above the law and is banking on being safe in California and Arizona because they wont extradite OUI's from other states. Im banking on him heading back to the clink sooner than later and will have no sympathy at all for him. If he thinks he is getting picked on then he thinks he is above everyone else. As a parent of kids myself, I don't care who you are. If your going to drive around impared from either booze or being hopped up on drugs then you deserve to sit your ass in jail and then do the probation thing as long as the state deems necessary. No exscuses. Kevin is a somewhat grown adult that is still acting like a 10 year old. Grow a set of nads Kevin and go do what is required.

FYI. . there a lot more people out there with the knowledge of sprint car racing racing the Eckert has. Many of them have "working" jobs however that prevent them from writing stories on the internet of how they have escaped the law, along with some actual racing news.
Personally, I wish Tom Savage from Sioux Falls would make a book out of all his racing knowlege. That would be a classic.
