NEW CALISTOGA SPEEDWAY MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTS NEW POLICIES

CALISTOGA, CA (February 21, 2013) – Newly appointed Calistoga Speedway Operations Manager Tommy Hunt and Napa County Fairgrounds CEO Carlene Moore have announced plans to enhance the fan and competitor experience at races in the future.

The World of Outlaws season opening event on April 6 will be the first race to benefit from new policies and directives aimed at improved track preparation, as well as existing facility upgrades. Attendees at the World of Outlaws event will be among the first to enjoy an improved racing surface that hopefully will generate a safe and exciting high-speed entertainment product.

When the winged warriors of the World of Outlaws such as 2012 Calistoga winner Donny Schatz and "The King" Steve Kinser hit the track, they will be experiencing a greatly improved Calistoga said World of Outlaws event promoter Chris Morgan.

"We are excited to again be bringing the 'Greatest Show on Dirt' to the most beautiful race track in America and look forward to the track improvements to bring more high speed side-by-side competitive racing to the legendary Calistoga half-mile."

All teams and cars will be pitted in the infield so that fans can enjoy the pit action, and have easy access to their favorite drivers and teams following the races.

Other projected facility upgrades include landscape maintenance improvements (including trimming or relocation of trees presenting viewing obstacles and potential safety issues), barrier realignment and securing, and exit and entry gate re-configuration. The grandstands side will receive attention to improve the fan experience including utilization of the lighted scoreboard.

The goal of the Calistoga Speedway's new business plan this year and beyond will be to create a pleasurable experience for both racers and fans.

Beyond the April 6th World of Outlaws race, the Calistoga Speedway will also host the popular West Coast Late Models and Modifieds on August 3rd, and the annual Louie Vermeil Classic for traditional non-wing USAC/CRA Sprints and USAC Western Midgets on August 31st-September 1st. More events are being scheduled by the speedway and will be announced soon.

The Calistoga Speedway half-mile is located at the Napa County Fairgrounds in Calistoga, CA and is consistently rated as the most beautiful dirt track in the country. It is also the oldest continuously operating dirt track on the West Coast. For more information, visit www.CalistogaSpeedway.org. Pre-sale ticket information for the World of Outlaws is available online as well, with both reserved and general admission tickets available at www.woocalistogaspeedway.com

This is great news! Tommy will do it right. His years with USAC will bring what it takes to make Calistoga a great venue.

Now that is officially the funniest effing thing I have ever heard. Tommy had talent and knew how to run a race track as well as promote an event loooooong before he became involved in USAC. It's Tommy's recent retirement from USAC that gives me the optimism that he will do the right thing for Calistoga Speedway. If he was still part of USAC you wouldn't see me anywhere near Calistoga during a race. The Vermeil is a success DESPITE USAC and I've said over a thousand times that the race is such a success that even USAC couldn't screw it up hoping every time that I wouldn't be wrong. I have no doubt that Calistoga is in the right hands with Tommy but if you compare how he operated USAC on the West Coast compared to USAC in the Midwest you would see just how little his time with USAC is an indicator of just how it is that good things are on the horizon for Calistoga Speedway. You also can't undervalue all of the hard working volunteers and current folks in a position to make decisions that will shape the speedway's future that we all can take confidence in. The Vermeil is the gold standard by which any dirt oval racing event hoping to call itself an "event" should aspire to and, folks, it's just getting started. I've been wrong before but this should be good......

Is mr hunt going prepare the track,or bring in more dirt for the 2nd year in a row,to me thats been the problem track prep, they are not going to pave the place are they or are they going to run nonwing races, because i think single file racing sucks thats calistoga for u,unless u need some cheese and wine then go,good luck mr hunt.

After consulting with many different people in the racing industry, they have made some plans to really change the surface of the track. I think you guys are in for a real treat on April 6. Calistoga will be a little bit different from what it used to be

Track changes, heard that story before, this particular fair board is difficult to work with, especially when u want to change something at calistoga, what did mr hunt do to get the fair board to give up control of this facility,no one in the past have been able to get the board to loosen there grip on this track.

They had a fast track at the last race of the season and we lost a racer because of it. The track doesnt need faster. It needs racier. Take the wings off and you have a pretty decent show. Fast and hooked up you get follow the leader at Calistoga like that last turd of an Outlaw show.

The Vermeil is on the downswing if last year is any indication. Hardly any big name drivers circling it on their schedule and the lack of star power was evident. No Gardner, Clayton, Larson, and all we had was Hirst leading wire to wire over a spec turned 410 in the guy from Indiana I cant spell his name. As far as gold standard goes, Trophy Cup called. It wants you to check yourself.

I have to agree or maybe it's because I've only seen the USAC guys there the last few years. Or maybe I don't understand the history of the place. But I'm still to see a race there that would get me to go back. Good luck Calistoga but a little to far for me to watch follow the leader . I'll stick with the bud ovals , gold cup . Western worlds and of course the best race of the year anywhere the TROPHY CUP.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Don't get me wrong - I have been to every single Trophy Cup and it is a great race that has turned into a pretty good "event" as well. What I mean by event is the special stuff that happens Labor Day weekend for the fans that make it more than just a race. As far as the lack of star talent you need to look no further than our good friends - USAC. While they are the sanctioning body for this event outside of providing officials the real value add for that event doesn't have a thing to do with them. If they want to take more credit than that in the grand scheme of things for this event try making it a USAC National Sprint and Midget stop on their schedule. Or at least don't schedule races in either series that weekend so that guys have the option to compete if they want to. Hell will have likely frozen completely solid before either of those things take place though. Until then the credit for the success of the Vermeil goes to people like the Hunts, The Hawkins Family, the Vermeil Family, Greg Sowers, and a list of countless others who have poured every thing they have into making that event what it is.

And just like that, we agree.

I hope Tony puts a lot of priority on the "Vermeil Classic" this year and once again make it race no one wants to miss. The last couple of years it's been sub par at best and needs some "guns" their, no offense Kyle Hirst. Calistoga is a magical place and as a person who's been going for 25 years plus don't want to lose this iconic facility. Please Tony pull down some names and cars this year and lets make it one to remember. I really don't want to go to Skagit and see Outlaws but another stinker year at the "classic" and I'm out!

I think mr hunt has lost touch with usac there has been alot of behind the scenes fighting between western usac and national usac as u can see from big fish reply that they still are,as long as the national series schedules a race against calisoga u will get no big names from the national series unless they find a name that doesnt care about national points i doubt it,time will tell.

Check this out . The USAC/ CRA had a better car count than the national series damn near all year long last year . And the national series only comes to California AGAIN for two days only at the end of the year for the Bud Ovals at perris. Sure they have there big names but we have some great ones also . Ripper, Mitchell, spencer, damion , fass, gaunt, Bud K is racing the series this year, cardey, bernal, auston and Cody Williams, the vanderweerd twins , Brody ,Kruseman, just name a few and there are a lot more . I believe the CRA series is gonna kick ass this year at one of if not the best tracks in the country. I think USAC national series should wake up and schedule more over here.

We'll have a shot at them first again this year Randy and remember Mike Martin and "5 time" Mike Spencer won both the big shows at their respective home tracks tracks last year.

Alex Bowman from Tucson AZ will finish ahead of Larson today, dirtbutt.
