My Brother, Richard (Dick) Symoens, passed away Monday after a long battle with cancer. You might remember him pacing the field in Gizmo, an old Ford Bronco with a custom red & white body. That came to an end when a sprint car nailed Gizmo while it was parked in the infield at Wilmot speedway. Dick worked the back straight at IRA events for a lot of years. He gave that up after several eye surgeries. Dick worked as IRA treasurer, statistician, and the web page up until a few weeks before his death.

RIP Dick Symoens. Deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Thanks Dick for all you did for the IRA and sprint car racing in general.

I have been going to Wilmot for about 48 years, and when we lose someone that has been associated with the track itself, or the IRA, it feels like the loss of a family member. I am sorry for your loss Joe, and for IRA's loss. R.I.P Dick

Soooo sorry to hear about this. We had a lot of great times with Dick in the Knoxville pressbox when he used to come for the IRA shows. He had a great sense of humor and will be sorely missed.

RIP...big loss to the sprint car community. One of those quiet leaders behind the scenes.

Mr. Symoens was always so kind to me in my IRA announcing days and also was very nice to me back when I was racing mini sprints (when we'd be a support class w/ IRA). When I was brought into the announcing spot for IRA Mr. Symoens, along with the scoring crew, always made sure I had the most recent points, driver stats, pill draws and news from the pits. He was quite proud of making sure I had those stats and whatever I needed. He often inquired on how things were going and was always quick with cordial words and of course some jokes. Although we'd sometimes give him grief, I will also always remember how proud he was of "Gizmo" - which he one night let me hop in for a few laps around Wilmot. After learning about how much time, effort and passion he put into "Gizmo", it was easily understood how cool of a guy he was. He caught a lot of flack online sometimes for things- but he always held his ground and stood up for what and whom he believed in and was a true IRA Fan to the core! Rest in Peace our friend- may this year be dedicated to your honor.
