Are the USAC races at Peoria the next couple of weeks worth going? Trying to decide if it's worth a 1200 mi round trip.

Please be aware that the six race dates in late Jan. and early Feb. are not USAC National Sprint Series dates, they are USAC Southwest and USAC West Coast Series co-sanctioned. The USAC National Sprint Series dates are March 1st and 2nd. That being said I went to two (nights) of the six Jan./Feb. races last year and thought they were worthwhile. Please check the tracks web site because some of the six race dates have earlier (day time) start times. If you're traveling 600 miles each way to get there the chances are probably good that the temps in Peoria will be much warmer than your temps at home--but bring warm clothes because when the sun goes down the temps drop quickly in the desert. Last year there were decent ticket discounts if you bought the six race ticket package.

It was great last year, and with shoe's like Clauson, Balou, Hines, Keading and other USAC National drivers there, it's going to be even better this year. Some good info here..http://www.hoseheadforums.com/forum.cfm?ThreadID=73330

The March 1st and 2nd show are not National Sprint car shows. They are USAC/CRA, and USAC WS midget shows

Is there any hotels that are more reasonably priced than the one that the track suggests? $163.00/night is not going to happen for me.

Also, looking at the map, it looks like the Phoenix airport and Mesa airport are about the same distance from the track....w/o knowing the roads and traffic, does it matter which I would fly into?

A lot of the teams stay at the Hampton in the north valley it's around 80 a night . I've always stayed there nice place. But there are cheaper around than that. Also check out canyons web .
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Camp in the parking lot right at the track.

I assure you that you won't be the only ones doing so.

Mister411, Thanks for correcting my mistake. USAC has so many schedules I misread it.

That's right, they've designated a camping area as you come toward and off to the left as you come to the parking area, but if it gets full you can park around the perimeter of the parking area. Since their having practice Thursday night, I expect some to get there early. Ha, Frosty might be there now.

Hey Kenny, what's the latest on the new track in Mexico that was to open last year? Did they run any races there and if so did you go?

I think I can help you a little bit with the airports. If you are flying commercially, Sky Harbor(PHX)is the closest major airport. An alternative is Mesa Gateway, which is a ways further (South of Gilbert and East of Chandler). This used to be Williams AF Base in the olden days and I know Allegient (sp?)flys into here and has pretty good rates. If you are flying private air, you can fly into Sky Harbor, Mesa Falcon Field, or, the closest one of all, Deer Valley. Hope this helps.

I know that area like the back of my hand Roger because I've been going down there since I was 10, and it's where I acquired my handle BIGFISH. There was no way in hell that sand pit was going to bring in any sprint cars: except Bobby Marcum in his 410 for the first race. Yep, just Bobby running some laps for 3 grand, a plush Hotel stay, food and drinks etc. The highlight was when the Mayor parked his Suburban down by the track, and Bobby blew the back window out with a rock!! The second time around he brought Zach Sawyer with him who's folks have a place down there around the corner in Cholla Bay. They had a good time playing in the sand and split the $$ between them. They did have a few dwarf cars and a Modified out on the track too, but nothing but goofing around. They have had some sand drags there and other likely stuff, and a few weeks ago some dwarf cars came down to play.

I still wonder how in the hell Bob Livingston talked his partner into spending the $ on that deal, or why Livingston ever thought it would work when he can't even get the Sprints to go back to his track in here AZ because of "issues" he's had in the past. Here's the video of first and the second "show".http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5PAAnswnJM. ....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnTbSkVQqSI

No I didn't go. I think I was fishing.LOL

no issues just would hate for anyone to get there and spend all that money to find out that all the National guys are not there.

Now with that said there will probably be a lot of National Drivers that do show up.

Last November we stayed at the LaQuinta on N 83rd, near nice restaurants, and a quick drive to the track. Good breakfast, excellent beds, great price....will stay there again. Flew into Sky Harbor, quick drive on the Interstates and you are there...

LOL, nothing private here.....I was thinking about Mesa only because it is about $60 cheaper to fly into from Denver. It doesn't sound like it is worth the savings.

THANKS

If you can save $60 I would fly into Mesa. You can catch the Freeway without too much trouble and instead of 40 minutes or so from Sky Harbor, it is an hour or so. Not that big of a deal. With 202, 101, I-10, and I-17, there is a lot of options.

I head down there a couple times a year. I will be heading down from Wisconsin for the March 1-2 show with CRA sprints and USAC Western States midgets. Its a good place to watch a race. No matter which airport you fly into, you will be looking at a 45-60 min drive to the track as its on the other side of Phoenix. If you do head down, have a green chili burrito at the track. They are pretty dang good (but sell out quickly!). I love how the highway just ends and turns into a gravel road with cattle guards, then BOOM, theres a race track in the middle of no where. Enjoy the trip!
