Pavement Track Welcomes World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars
Elko Speedway to cover pavement for unique dirt event on Friday, May 10
ELKO, Minn. - Nov. 27, 2012 - For the first time since a successful two-year stint at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2000-01, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars will compete on a pavement track temporarily covered in dirt in 2013.
Elko Speedway, a 3/8-mile pavement track located approximately a half hour south of Minneapolis, will host its first-ever World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event on Friday, May 10.
Sammy Swindell, who won twice on the dirt-caked Bristol Motor Speedway, touted the job of covering Bristol Motor Speedway as a success. He also added that it levels the playing field for all competitors.
"You don't know what you're going to be up against until you get there," Swindell said.
While it will be the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at Elko Speedway, it's far from the first race on dirt at the semi-banked oval. Track owner Tom Ryan said Elko Speedway is covered in dirt each fall to end the season and begin the ensuing season. A variety of events are held on the dirt before it is pealed for the pavement season.
"We do it all the time," Ryan said. "It's not so much a new thing for us to have dirt on our track, but to have the World of Outlaws is certainly huge.
"We've had nothing but success on dirt. It really, truly is a progressive banking. For sprint cars, there are three full grooves all around the track. They can run low. They can run high. They can run a diamond pattern. We see it all."
Stay tuned to WoOsprint.com and SLSpromotions.com for more information throughout the off-season.

Never been to Elko, but it looks awesome!
Hoping for an early May stop in Wisco now too.

Elko is a great place for the WoO. Not a bad seat in the stands you can see everything, I think Tmac or Travis Whitney holds the track record, will see if that stands. Already got it marked on the calendar.

Should be a great venue for the WOO. Absolutely the best facilities from a fan standpoint that I've been too. Track should have at least two good lines and it seems to hold moisture well even though it's over paving. Only drawback is that on May 10 we could still have a foot of snow on the ground. Bring winter clothes! Wonder what they will have for a support class? They've had 360 sprints about that time the past couple of years. Could we possibly have AN ALL SPRINT SHOW?????? Should draw well. Princeton and Cedar Lake both draw good crowds for the WOO and this is more or less halfway between them, but further south.

How about UMSS 360 winged and 360 traditional non wings as support classes?

I had the UMSS sprints in mind. I'd really like to see the non-wings too since I missed them this past year. Sounds like they're getting enough cars to make it interesting now. Since Knoxville is probably running the WOO the next night, if they ran 360's as the support (as they probably will), it'd be a real good early opportunity for a lot of midwest 360 teams to get a couple of shake down runs in before their home seasons start.

Elko is a great track to bring along non-race-fan friends and relatives. If they get bored with the races there is a night club under the grandstand with live music and a full bar.
