The following is an opinion stolen from the MRN site! Wink

The IZOD IndyCar Series should thank its lucky stars for the National Hockey League.

Without the stupidity of the NHL experiencing its third work stoppage in a decade, American open-wheel racing would be the worst professional sports league in the country.

Since the infamous CART-IRL war of the mid-1990s, Indy car racing has gone through several incarnations in hopes of returning to the glory days it once enjoyed. But any progress, as small as it might be, has been quickly eradicated by greed, shortsightedness and absolutely zero direction.

Now, the sport is struggling to stay alive and find even a shred of relevance - let alone ever challenging NASCAR for American motor sports prominence, as once seemed possible.

There actually was a time when Indy car racing was more popular than NASCAR with tremendous attendance, solid corporate sponsorship and higher television ratings. But that's ancient history and even with NASCAR’s recent downturn, big-league stock car racing dwarfs today’s IndyCar Series.

There was actually some improvements made this past season with the introduction of a new car and a competitive on-track product. While TV ratings remained abysmal, attendance in at least some venues was encouraging.

However, that foundation may very well be completely erased with this week’s decision to run off CEO Randy Bernard.

Once again, the inmates that insist on running the asylum - namely a group of car owners - have decided that reason and fresh ideas are no way to run a racing series. So after three years of doing what he could to bring back to life the dead corpse of Indy car racing, Bernard was sent packing.

Former Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IRL founder Tony George tried again to wrest control of the series from the IMS Board of Directors that oversees the circuit. But so far, he’s been rebuffed and the decision makers continue on their latest path of self-destruction.

Bernard’s track record certainly wasn’t perfect. In the end, spending more than the projected budget was probably his downfall - with circumstances like the cancelled China race bleeding red ink expediting his exit. But there’s no arguing that the former head of the Professional Bull Riders circuit brought out-of-the-box thinking to the moribund world of Indy car competition.

Bernard helped usher in a new car, brought back the Triple Crown from the sport’s past and tried to spice the schedule up with the doubleheader concept that will be part of next year’s schedule.

But now, there’s no telling what lies ahead. Open-wheel loyalists were outraged at my recent suggestion the series concept simply go away and all focus be put on the only Indy car race that remotely matters, the Indianapolis 500.

But the reality is that even “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” has lost most of its luster and this latest misstep by the powers that be won’t help the cause.

Indy car racing has, sadly, lost its way ... again.

The question is not only who will try to lead it back but if anyone really cares.

What a sad state Indy Car has slithered to. Put the motor in front, run ovals and do real racing.

They need to take a HUGE step backwards. They need to quit trying to draw the "champagne and caviar" crowd and get back to their roots and try to bring back the "beer and peanuts" crowd. I guarantee there are a lot more REAL race fans in the latter category. Reunite with USAC. It would be a boost to two racing organizations desperately in need of it. Hell, go back to the way it was in their "glory days" and make the dirt Silver Crown cars Dirt Champ Cars again with them being points races toward the Champ Car points title. I remember when the IRL started, Tony George said they were going to concentrate on homegrown talent. I thought, "Wow, they've finally figured it out." Lol, that lasted a long time, didn't it? They're going to continue to die a slow, sad, and miserable death until the "powers that be" realize the true American fan base goes out to their local short tracks on weekends and are proud and supportive when the drivers they watched develop their skills on those local tracks make the big time. I still watch the Indy 500 every year. I probably watch it more for the sentimental value than for any other reason. Growing up, Memorial Day was a trip to Sedalia for the races. Part of the mandatory gear? A portable radio to listen to Indy on. Americans march to the beat of a different drummer when it comes to sports (i. e. American football, baseball.) If you want an American fan base you had better put a product on the track that Americans identify with.

I think the problem is that they just don't care to shake the image of being the MLS to F1's UEFA Champions League.

The International Drivers tend to scoff at the idea of having to drive ovals (and seem to only be there to bide time while hoping and praying an F1 seat somehow opens up for them), and the American drivers know that the big money is in NASCAR.

missourirace fan (being from Joplin I like your name) I agree with everything you said..with one exception..and that is USAC. I would like to stay as far away from them as possible. I just wonder if it isn't too late to resurrect this series?

First off, I want to thank you Scott, and Kirk, for what you do, and enjoy listening to your show on WHB 810 on Saturday Mornings. I agree a lot with Kirk's article, but my personal opinion is that it was on the downhill slide before the Brickyard. They had already, for the most part, quit giving legitimate shots to homegrown drivers. If they would have stuck to their roots and continued to give homegrown drivers a legitimate shot, they would probably still be a thriving series. Instead, they stuck most of them in some shitbox that couldn't get out of it's own way, let alone be competitive. I think their only hope is to go out and actively pursue the talent that's running America's short tracks today.

I know USAC is having their problems, too. I prefer nonwing dirt racing, whether it be sprints, midgets, or Silver Crown, and I guess I still consider them the leader. Especially in sprints and Silver Crown.

You can blame those who bought rides out from under talented drivers.....its happening in all levels now but started back in the 70s at INDY.
I don't aim to please.
I aim to hit the target.
