Sprint car driver chases his dream all the way to a
championship

For some people owning a home is a dream
come true. For Jeremy Schultz, selling his house
was a way to pursue his dream.
Schultz took the money from selling the home he
owned and invested it into building a sprint car
and racing.
“I just decided I wanted to do it,” Schultz said of
the decision he made in 2007 at age 23.
His dad Jerry Schultz thought it was a crazy idea even though he had raced years ago and was
at least partially responsible for giving Jeremy the racing bug.
Going to the track and watching races led Jeremy to connect with Scotty Neitzel in 1999. He
helped Neitzel’s team field a 410 sprint car in the Interstate Racing Association. The highpoint
came when Neitzel won back to back championships in 2004 and 2005.
“It gets in your blood,” Jeremy said. “It was always my dream to be a sprint car driver.”
When he made that dream a reality in 2007, Schultz ran a limited schedule in a 360 sprint car.
That set him up to try a full schedule of 40 races in the Midwest Sprintcar Association in 2008.
He applied the lessons he learned from Neitzel and his team as well as R&H Enterprises,
where he repaired cars for a period.
Schultz won rookie of the year honors for Eastern Wisconsin Stock Cars and narrowly missed
MSA rookie of the year honors in 2008. In 2009 he was the Midwest Sprint Car Association
most improved driver and finished fifth in points.
Schultz missed a few races in 2010 due to illness and wasn’t as successful. He readily admits
the race schedule can be grueling with two races a weekend most weeks. He works full-time at
Apache Stainless and spends his free time, especially during racing season, keeping the car
ready.
“It definitely takes a team, you can’t do it yourself,” Schultz said, acknowledging the help of his
dad as well as Jason Schultz, Dan Nesper, Grayson Stocks, Jay Zamzow, Collin Kittleson,
Reggie Hummelmeier, Eric Fhlug and Kyle Peters.
The teamwork paid off in 2011 with five wins in the MSA and a fourth place finish in points. But Jerry Schultz said winning a championship was the goal.
In 2012, Schultz finished with one win, 10 second place finishes, 22 top five finishes and 27 top
10 finishes. That earned the team the coveted MSA championship they were pursuing. He also
raced in six IRA 410 shows, setting the stage for 2013 when he plans to move up to compete in
the 410 sprint car IRA schedule.
The season ended a few weeks ago, but he already is working on preparing for next year. He
not only is getting a car ready, the team is pursuing sponsorships as well.
Schultz said it beats sitting on a barstool every weekend and he gets to spend time with his
friends and family pursuing a dream.
“It’s very rewarding, Schultz said. “I love racing.”
