Speed, Excitement and Fireworks on July 4th at Silver Dollar Speedway
Wednesday night, July 4th, the best in dirt track racing will help celebrate Independence Day at Silver Dollar Speedway. The family friendly atmosphere will also include post race fireworks. Racing action on the track will take place with the popular 410 winged sprint cars, dirt modifieds and wingless sprints. Following the races a spectacular light show in the summer sky will conclude an action packed night of speed, side-by-side racing and fireworks. As usual, the winner of the 25-lap winged sprint car main event will pay $2,000.
The pit gate will open at 3 p.m. The front grandstand gate will open at 4 p.m. Sprint car qualifying is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
Adult grandstand price is $14.00; juniors are $10.00 and children 11 and under are free.
Former track champion Tim Kaeding returned to Silver Dollar Speedway this past Friday night. Kaeding electrified the crowd with a last lap pass of Brett Miller to win a heat race. Then in the main event Kaeding charged through the field to finish second, not before giving leader and eventual winner Stephen Allard all he could handle. Kaeding had been traveling the last few years winning races all over the United States racing with the now defunct National Sprint Tour and World of Outlaws. Last year and part of this year Kaeding was driving a second car for 20-time World of Outlaw Champion Steve Kinser. Kinser, known as the King in our sprint car world, could not find a sponsor to keep the team alive. About two months ago the car was parked and Kaeding was left looking for a new team to hang his helmet bag. Kaeding subbed for Brooke Tatnell, who returned home to Australia to be with his sick father. When Tatnell returned Kaeding was once again searching. At that same time car owner Tom Rolfe and his driver Jason Statler were parting ways. Some of Kaeding's most memorable years in California sat behind the Tom Rolfe Trucking #10. Phone calls were exchanged and a deal was struck to bring Kaeding back to California and drive the Duke and Scott McMillen prepared #10. In their first night together Kaeding drove to a second place finish and Chico and then the following night won the 30-lap main event at Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare. Reunited and it feels so good…
Brandon Davis continues to lead the wingless sprint point standings. Davis is a rookie in the class but handles himself like a veteran. His 13-point lead over Jay Youngman gives him a little cushion heading into this Wednesday night. One of the proudest interviews I have conducted happened last Friday night when Sparky Howard said he had been racing for 23-years and never won at Chico. His smile in victory lane showed how much love he had for the sport that took him a long time to get that first win at Silver Dollar Speedway.
Chico's Richard Papenhausen extended his point lead with one of the most exciting finishes in Silver Dollar History. I'm sure Mark Abouzeid feels otherwise about the situation. Abouzeid had led every lap of the main event until coming out of turn four Papenhausen and he got together. The two spun through the front straight and across the finish line, backwards and sideways. Papenhausen was ruled the winner because he slid through the finish line first. Abouzeid was looking for his fourth win in five races. Papenhausen takes his commanding point lead into this Wednesday night. Papenhausen holds an 81-point lead over Darin Ruley.
