Well, I don't have any stories about Economaki himself, but I do have many wonderful memories of his great National Speed Sport News. My dad had already subscribed to that paper for many years before I was born and had select issues that he kept in storage that I would read. As I grew up, one of my favorite memories was running out to the mailbox on Thursday to see if the latest issue had arrived. I was always disappointed if it didn't and really disappointed if it didn't arrive until Saturday for some reason. Then I would go inside and look for the CRA article even though I'd been to the race the week before. When I finally grew up and moved out on my own I would still always look forward to the paper's arrival every week. I miss those days.

I was sure that my mail carrier was a race fan because my National Speed Sport News always came one day after my friends got theirs and two days later if their was a significant event. I did brush in to Mr. Economaki one time at a IMSA race down in Del Mar. He was positioning himself to be the first to interview David Brabham after David had DNF'd.

Before the races the last time Chris came to The PAS, he was standing in front of the concession stand talking to someone. As fans passed by, they would hear his voice and stop in their tracks and look around to see where he was. He greeted every single one of them cordially.

When you talked to him about a particular subject in racing, he would come up with some minute details about that subject that would just blow you away. His knowledge of racing and it's people was second to none. There is an old saying about people with a vast knowledge of a subject that goes, "he forgot more about (whatever subject) than everyone else will ever know." Don't think that one applied to Chris as I don't think he forgot anything. He will be sorely missed.

Did a little stringer reporting and photography work for Chris and his daughter Corinne around CA and AZ in the '90s including an interview with Kieth Hall and Windy McDonald at Manzanita that explained in detail why Kieth, Don K. and Jim N. decided to go with USAC vs. SCRA at that time. Chris and Corinne were nice people to work for. Much changed when Corinne left the paper, and Chris was influenced to get "modern" to attract more advertising during the NASCAR uptrend about a dozen years ago. The new format was "pretty" but did away with the superb coverage of small track racing that had made NSSN so meaningful to many.

I've always heard a story about when my Grandpa and Uncle took the car to race in the Seattle kingdome and Economaki not believing my Grandpa's home built midget that was a Edmunds copy was really "home built" until he asked around the pit's and then gave his "approval" LOL
