After reading all the things that are wrong with Knoxville (Toby Kruse thread) I just wanted to share some thoughts.
The oversized fairboard is not a big help. They need new blood (AJ from the Dingus would be a great start). They need guys that want to help promote the raceway and AJ has shown he is a promotor. I was told from a good source that Knoxville was paying more for their Pepsi products than Marshalltown does. That is what happens when people get to comfortable.
The Iowa Speedway has not helped also, remember when it was built the statement from the track was we will not compete against Knoxville, just about all of their events are now on Sauturday nights. We need to remember that Gateway International (St. Louis), Memphis Motor Sports Park, Nashville Superspeedway, Pikes Peak International Speedway, The Milwaukee Mile, and Nazareth Speedway all hosted the same events that Iowa Speedway hosts and all but Milwaukee are now closed. I hear the crowds are down and they could suffer the same fate as the other listed above unless a Cup date is secured.
I felt Toby and crew did a very good job this year, weekly crowds seemed up. I watch as Toby thanked the car owners and drivers for competing and talking with them. That does not happen at many other race tracks. The cost of racing continues to go higher and I feel that John McCoy will be a force in helping curb the costs of racing. Car counts where down and it does not help that the nearest tracks running sprint cars are Eagle and Husets.
I think going forward Knoxville needs to offer free admission to kids 16 and under, have $1 concession nights, have cheap beer nights, do anything to make the night not so expensive that families can attend and they will then start coming more often and the racing a Knoxville is second to none.
Lets continue the discussion because most of us are passionate about racing and want to see it flourish
