$2,500-TO-WIN "BILLET CUP" AT SANTA MARIA SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29TH
MAIN EVENT WILL FEATURE EXTRA $10,000 POINT FUND
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – SEPTEMBER 20, 2012... On Saturday, September 29th, the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will return to Santa Maria Speedway for the "John Jewett Memorial Billet Cup" presented by Southwest Contractors. The special event will feature a passing points format with a fully inverted main event paying $2,500-to-win, $300-to-start, and $100-to-non-transfers. In addition, the 30-lap feature will have an extra $10,000 point fund, making this the richest night in series history.

Showcasing a format similar to the popular "Trophy Cup," Promoter Chris Kearns has put together nearly $25,000 in total payout for this one day event. With the extra point fund, the high point driver entering the main event could take home $5,000 if they win from the rear of the field. The "John Jewett Memorial Billet Cup" winner will also get a one-of-a-kind custom billet aluminum cup trophy. For placing last in the feature, that driver will get a minimum bonus of $200, bringing their payday to $500. The entry fee is $75 and both the main event purse and point fund are listed at the end of this release.

To date, five different drivers have scored feature wins in 2012. Bud Kaeding leads all drivers with four victories and Ryan Bernal has claimed three. Kyle Larson swept the 2-day "Faria Memorial," Cory Kruseman won Santa Maria's "Doug Fort Memorial," and Richard Vander Weerd drove to the Jim Evett Memorial victory at Hanford. The Josh Ford Motorsports Team has claimed six of the eleven victories with Bernal, Larson, and Kruseman at the controls.

The USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series will return to action this Saturday, September 22nd, at Kevin Montgomery's Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona. The "Brawl For It All" will be the final round of the USAC vs. ASCS "Grudge Series" and will also feature the Southwest Modlites and ASCS2 Mini Sprints. Located at 9777 West Carefree Highway, more event information can be found at www.canyonspeedwaypark.com or calling (602) 258-RACE (7223).

"The special event will feature a passing points format with a fully inverted main event paying $2,500-to-win, $300-to-start, and $100-to-non-transfers.

What is the format?

"Showcasing a format similar to the popular "Trophy Cup"" I believe the Trophy Cup format for the one night non-wing night has 2 main events.

If the feature pays $2,500 to win, what keeps someone from Sandbagging and not worrying about total points.

If someone finished 3rd in the race and 3rd in points, that would equal $1550 compared to winning the race.

If someone sandbagged, started up front and won just the feature he would win at least $2700 probably more.

As a fan (and I guess a driver or owner) I think the Billet Cup Point Fund should pay the bulk of the purse so no one tries to sandbag. If you took 50% or 75% out of the race purse, and put it toward the point fund, I bet the racing would be more spirited. The overall winner of the event (and the top 3 or 5 drivers) for the point fund should be rewarded for their efforts, not someone who wins from a good starting position. The actual winner of the race is the one who has the most points (if you have a totally inverted start) and not the one who crosses the start finish line.

No matter what they do, I am LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS EVENT. Wished more tracks had the balls to have totally inverted main events and see what drivers are the best ones at passing cars and racing.

Anyone who has witnessed the Trophy Cup on the final night, will say this is the most intense and exciting racing of the season, wing or non-wing wink
