I last attended the Nationals over 10 years ago. I gather that the qualifying system has changed. I've seen the points totals from Wed & Thu. What happens tonight and how can that change the points? And, how are the cars allocated into the A, B, C, etc. after tonight?

With the new format this year, points only matter until Thursday's racing is over. At that time, places 1-16 are locked into Saturday's A. Places 17-26 can be locked into the front 5 rows of Saturday's B, but the drivers have the option to give up their points and race again on Friday. If anyone gives up their points, the option then goes to 27, 28, 29, etc. until there are 10 drivers committed to standing on their points for Saturday's B.
The way it was explained to me by John McCoy (Knoxville Race Director) is that on Friday there is 1-lap qualifying for all cars, 7 heats (4 invert, 2 transfer), 3 B-Mains (also transfer 2), and the 4 quickest qualifiers that don't make it from the B tag the tail of the A. Friday's A starts straight up (no invert). The top 4 finishers in the A-Main earn spots 17-20 in Saturday's A. The driver finishing 5th on Friday earns the 11th starting spot in Saturday's B, 6th on Friday starts 12th, 7th on Friday starts 13th, and so on.

what happens to the current drivers who's point totals after Wed / Thurs have them slated for positions 11-xx in Sat's NB main?
or are they automatically entered to run tonight?

Eldora 2287 ft/.43mile T3=135MPH
Port 2716 ft/.51 mile T3=TBD
Grove 2792 ft/.53 mile T3=135MPH
Selinsgrove 2847 ft/.54 mile T1=136MPH

There was no proverbial 'slate' this year for positions 11 on back in Saturday's B Main. Those guys have to run tonight. Some of them maybe wish they didn't have to, but others like the #11 are damn lucky they get another chance! Steve would be on the pole of the C Scramble (50th in pts) under the old format. He still might be in the C-Main if he sucks as bad tonight as he did Wednesday... but could also get a spot in the A.

so if I have this correct...those teams cannot "stand" on their points?
this almost sounds like tonight will be wreckers or checkers!

There are no more points except for the 26 that are locked in. That is correct...

That's correct, BRR. The points mean nothing from this point in the week forward. Every place you gain on the track tonight in the B-Mains or the A-Main directly gains you starting spots for Saturday night.

11th in the B isn't the kiss of death (like 11th in the C) .... as the B is 22 laps and the track is usually wide enough to pass... but yeah, 17th in the A is quite a bit better!
