I just read where "The Flying Dutchman" Dutch Ter Steege, is in a coma after suffering a stroke earlier this week. Unconfirmed that they are going to take him off life support. If this is the case, my heart felt sympathies to all his family.

I first met Dutch when I worked at that wanna be race parts place called HMD back in 2002. He would come in regularly and got to know him well. We talked qui
te often and he would tell me about how he got into racing and all his stories. The man was genuine and would ALWAYS speak. I am honored to have known him.

While he tore up the competition on that quarter mile, I think what I remember the most was that night where they had to handcuff him on the front stretch to get him off the track. He would smile and kinda laugh when he told me about that night.

Dutch, I hope that somehow you will pull through this. My prayers are with you my friend.

They are assembling the racers at our old Fairgrounds Speedway for a big ole reunion up in the sky. Jack Claxton is very patiently awaiting them to assemble track side to do those introductions while Larry Hill and Bud Carson are on hand thinking what next big event they will want to hold. "Slugo" is giving everybody a hard time but keeping people in line. How I miss those guys I grew up watching race and promote. One day I will be up there in those stands to sit and enjoy, just as I did growing up.

I was just informed that DUTCH passed away last night.

I wrote an article about Dutch's life and racing career for Oklahoma Motorsports Monthly, I think in '92. The editor put him on the cover and he was so excited. When I called him up for the interview we talked for hours. I feel very fortunate to have been able to do that.

This is his daughter Rebecca and My dad has not passed away yet. He did have a stroke on Thursday, the clot buster medication they used on him caused bleeding in his brain. He is in a coma so its just a matter of time till he lets go. He is comfortable and in no pain. I will update everyone when the time comes.

Dad is not on life support. If you know him you know that would never do. He is resting comfortably. Many wonderful friends from the racing family have visited, I would like to thank you all for your prayers and support.

This is Ingrid ter Steege, Dutch's daughter. I would love to have a copy of that if possible. Thank you.

Hi Ingrid. I'm sure I have a few copies. Let me double check tonight and we'll figure out the best way to get them to you. Are you in Oklahoma City?

I live in Norman but would be happy to stop by anywhere and pick them up or you could mail them to me at 10902 Spencer Circle, Norman, OK 73026. Dad is still here but the end is near, all we can do now is keep him as comfortable as possible. Thank you for your friendship with him.

Ingrid, speaking with your father about his life in racing was a great way to spend an evening! I'll never forget it. I have located one copy of the magazine but I'm sure I have several more stored away some place. If you want to come pick up the one I have, you're welcome to come by my shop. Or, I can let you know when I find the others so you can have a few extra copies to pass around to others in your family. If you want to come by to get the one I have, please email me at darkhouse at gmail.com for directions. Jason

Dutch passed away this morning, on the 27th day of the 7th month, he was in room #7, he lasted 7 days after the stroke, so we had said our last goodbyes 7 times and ironically the hospice password was racecar. I guess everything was in alignment and he was ready. I will miss him so very much.

If you could take a moment and find a couple of copies, I would be truly grateful. I would like to have a couple set around at the memorial service. Which we are hoping to have next Friday night. Venue to be announced.

Thank you so much for your friendship with dad. I look forward to meeting you.

Ingrid

I really don't know what to say other than it was my privilage to have met and talked to the man, not to mention having watched him race.

Please keep us all posted on services. Obviously Scott Munn with the Daily Oklahoman is checking it as well. I will email him to let him know.

If the family needs anything, please let the racing family know.

R.I.P Dutch

Also he was 77 years old. So that is a lot of 7's!

Jason,

The one copy of the magazine will be terrific! May I pick it up sometime before Wednesday evening?

The memorial service will be held at the Wiley Post Event Center from 6pm to 9pm, Wednesday, August 1st, located at S.W. 17th St. and Robinson, OKC. A come and go event where we are looking forward to being regaled with wonderful, crazy stories about The Flying Dutchman.

Yes, you may pick it up. The shop is located not too awfully far from where the memorial service will be. You can pick it up that day or you can come any time before that if you'd like to have some copies made. But we are only here till 5. Call me (631 6516 and ask for Jason) and I'll give you directions. I was unable to find the other copies but if I do run across them I will bring some more Wednesday night.
