I read Tom Savages article in FlatOut this month: "The Hermit & The Extrovert". Savages version leads you to believe these two drivers were arch enemies but another article (also a video) from a crew member of Dawleys spoke as if they were friendly rivals (see exerpt below) I have heard so many versions of this crash that I don't know which to believe, Some say it was so horendous that they knew people that never returned to the races, others say it was not as bad as it was made out to be. Dick Stoneking is another that I have heard so many versions that you don't know what to believe! Last one I heard of Stoneking was that Tim Green recklessly drove him straight into the I-beam at the front stretch pit entrance and basically tore him and the car apart. I don't believe this about Green because I have always heard good things about this driver but it's just crazy how you get so many versions. Like Savage & Giadone, One is a Sprintcar historian and the other the drivers Crew chief.. Who do you believe? (Copied from: http://www.keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?id=87273) Giadone says Dawley's and Larson's rivalry was also a friendly one. "That week that they both died, Roger had come to the shop earlier that week, he asked Darryl if he could weld some wheels up, and he said, 'Yeah, I'll have them done Thursday night.'" Giadone said. "So Thursday night rolled around, Roger stopped by, he brought some beer along, and they shot the breeze for a while. And then, that was about that."

Doug Wolfgang mentions this incident in his book. He, of course, knew them both and was there on the front straight. That should be a pretty good source.
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

I like Tom's style of writing where he doesn't tell you who he's talking about until the end of the article. I'm reading his stuff trying to guess who it is and the end result is that I concentrate a little harder on what I'm reading and never forget it after one read. That and the fact that he's out of Sioux Falls so he writes about a lot of familiar drivers stands out for me.
